Part II: Actions That Leave a Mark on the Heart

Cassian understood perfectly how Abril felt because he felt the same way. He loved Maya so much that he preferred to let her go rather than lose her completely. He preferred to know she was well, even if she wasn’t with him. After Cassian updated them on everything that had happened since they arrived in the
land of the fairies, Abril and Kiara went to the room assigned to them, as they couldn’t see Maya. Although
Abril wanted to keep Cassian company, he insisted it wasn’t necessary.
Abril was playing with Lissana while Kiara was absorbed, staring into the distance as if searching for
something.
“Is something wrong?”
“No, nothing. Nothing’s wrong.”
“It doesn’t seem that way. You look worried. I’m a good listener, so if you want to talk, I’ll listen.”
“I have nothing to say.”
“I think you do. Your insides must be a mess right now. Do you really plan to give up on Barto?”
“He gave up first.”
“I don’t think he did it because he doesn’t love you. It’s complicated; his sister was in danger, and he
thought he was the only one who could help her.”
“That’s stupid because it wasn’t the only way, but he didn’t want to listen to me.”
“Well, in the end, he didn’t come to the land of the fairies.”
“Yes, and I think that’s what hurts the most because it wasn’t for me.”
Abril could see the pain, anger, and disappointment reflected on Kiara’s face. She had left him, had gone
without letting him speak, but it wasn’t out of anger; it was out of pain. She did it to protect her wounded
heart because she didn’t want to hear anything more that would break her.
“When you run away to avoid getting hurt, you end up carrying an unbearable pain that doesn’t let you
breathe. So even if it hurts, even if it breaks you, face it. Don’t run away.”
“It’s easier said than done.”
“Maybe you’re right, but I think it’s for the best. Otherwise, you’ll live your whole life wondering what would
have happened if you had given him the chance to speak.”
Kiara fixed her gaze back into the distance, pondering what Abril had said. After a few long minutes of silence, she replied.
“I suppose you’re right.”

The next day, the fairy queen went to visit Maya. She seemed to be much better, but not enough to leave
the room.
“Cassian told me about the marriage mark. Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“Because he wanted to protect you.”
“Protect me! He just didn’t want me to be free.”
“He only wanted you to have a better life than…”
Maya knew very well the words that would follow and the reason why the fairy queen was obsessed with
her. She knew it the moment they had intertwined and she had taken her pain. That had answered many
questions and left a lasting mark on her heart.
“Like her daughter?”
The queen didn’t respond, but it wasn’t necessary. Maya continued.
“Since she met me, she hasn’t stopped comparing me to her, seeing her daughter reflected in me. But I’m
not her daughter.”
“And yet you make the same mistakes she did.”
“Loving and wanting to unite your life with your partner is not a mistake. The mistake would be to listen to
others and let go of the hand of the one you love, living a long and lonely life regretting every day that you
let him go. I don’t know if it was the same for her daughter, but even knowing everything I would have to
endure, I would shed my blood on that marriage scroll again. I would unite my heart with Cassian’s again.”
“You don’t know what you’re saying.”
“I do. Now more than ever, I’m sure of it.”
“I truly hope you don’t regret what you’ve done.”
“Throughout my life, I’ve regretted many things, but marrying the man I love won’t be one of them.”
“You’re a fool.”
“Yes, maybe I am, but a very happy one.”
The fairy queen turned around, and before opening the door, she asked.
“Maya, do you hate me?”
“I hated that you wouldn’t let me go. I hated being tied to the land of the fairies, but I don’t think I hate you,
at least not now.”
“I see.”
That was all the queen said before leaving the room. After stepping out and closing the door behind her,
Cassian asked.

“How much longer will Maya have to stay in that room?”

“First of all, no one is keeping her locked up. She’s there to recover. She can leave whenever she wants. If
you’re asking about her health, I’d say she’s better, but not enough. She should stay a few more days to
ensure she’s well and the baby has no problems.”
Cassian remained silent. The fairy queen continued on her way, but before leaving, she turned and said.
“You should get some proper rest. I don’t think seeing you in such bad shape will put Maya at ease.”
After saying that, the fairy queen disappeared down the long hallway. She went to the throne room, where
her fairy advisor, Misha, asked.
“How is the girl?”
“She’s improving.”
The queen settled into her throne. Misha served her a glass of fruit wine and said.
“Your Majesty has been through a lot these days. You should try to rest.”
“I’m fine.”
“It doesn’t seem that way.”
The fairy queen took a sip of the sweet wine Misha had served her.
“Your Majesty, the girl cannot be your successor. You should look for a new one.”
“I know.”
“Do you already have someone in mind?”
“Hmm… maybe.”
“Would you tell me who it is?”
“Maya’s brother offered to be my successor. He is part of my lineage.”
“And when do you plan to bring him? There are many things you need to teach your successor. I remind
you that the power possessed by those of your lineage is sealed within each of them.”
“I know, and I also know it will be a headache to teach them to control their power.”
“If you know that, you should hurry.”
The queen stared at the liquid in the glass for a moment, then responded.
“I think you’re right. I should start moving my pieces and training my new successor.”

Cassian entered to see Maya after the fairy queen had left. When she saw him, she tried to sit up, but Cassian stopped her. “Don’t get up, you need to rest.”
Maya let out a long sigh. “I’m tired of lying down, and the smell of flowers is making me dizzy”
“I still don’t understand why the bed is filled with flowers; it doesn’t seem comfortable.”
Maya stroked the petals. “They’re silk flowers, very soft and comfortable, and they don’t spoil easily. Fairies often use them for their beds because it makes them feel more connected to nature, to the earth. Here, that means it revitalizes. Although not everyone uses them; some use feathers or cotton for their beds.”
“Then hold on a bit longer. The queen said you’ve improved a lot.”
“Yes, she told me the same. I hope to leave this room soon.”
“Abril is here.”
“What?!”
“She arrived yesterday with Kiara and Lissana.”
Maya didn’t seem surprised to hear that Abril had brought Lissana. “Aren’t you surprised that Lissana is
here?”
“To be honest, no. Abril had already told me about Lissana’s situation and asked me to take care of her
while she’s here.”
“I guess I was the only one who didn’t know.”
“I didn’t want to worry you, that’s why I didn’t tell you.”
“It doesn’t matter now.”
It took Maya two more days to be able to leave that room. Once out, the first thing she did was look for
Abril. After an emotional reunion, they stayed chatting for a while.
“How long do you plan to stay here?” Maya asked Abril.
“I don’t know. I wouldn’t want to leave Lissana.”
“I understand perfectly.” Maya touched her belly. “My son hasn’t been born yet, but I couldn’t separate from
him either; it would be like tearing out my heart.”
That was precisely how Abril felt, which is why she hadn’t set a date for her return. Abril began to stroke her little one’s chubby cheeks and said, “Maya told me that the bond tying you to the fairy queen is completely broken, that you’re free now. When will you leave?”
“Even though I look fine right now, I still feel tired and fatigued, so I’ll stay for a while. I think I’ll wait until

my baby is born.”
“That surprises me. I thought you wouldn’t want to have your baby in the land of the fairies.”

“I’m doing it because I’m afraid of what might happen, afraid that the war against darkness will reach us before my baby is born. Here, time is different; what would be months in the human world could be years here. And it’s undoubtedly the safest kingdom of all.”
Maya intertwined her hand with Cassian’s. “We both decided that it would be best for our child to be born
here.”
“Aren’t you afraid the fairy queen will want to take him?”
“My child, like Lissana, will have guardian blood. She won’t be able to keep him.”
“You’re right.”
“Aby, we’ll take care of Lissana while we’re here.”
“Thank you very much.”
Cassian responded, “You don’t need to thank us. She’s my dear niece, my family. I’ll take good care of her. Please tell Lessan when you go back.”
“Are you staying too?”
“Yes, this time I’m not leaving without her.”
“Even though I can’t see my little one grow up, I’ll be more at ease knowing you two will take care of her.”
Maya remembered that her brother had mentioned some mirrors that could reflect the person you missed the most and show them to you, even allowing you to talk to them. These were very rare objects found in the land of the fairies. If they could get them, Abril could see her daughter grow up despite being far away.
But since she wasn’t sure if those mirrors were real, she didn’t mention it to Abril at that moment. She
would ask the queen about them and, depending on the answer, she would tell Abril.
The next day, Maya got up very early and went to see the fairy queen. She was in the garden practicing
archery, something she usually did in the mornings to clear her mind, or at least that’s what she had told
her once. The queen had just shot three arrows at the same time, all hitting the target, which greatly
– surprised Maya.
“Your Majesty, could I have a moment of your valuable time?”
The queen lowered her bow and handed it to one of the fairies accompanying her. “I haven’t had breakfast
yet. Let’s have breakfast together.”
With a wave of her hand, the queen changed her training clothes, something Maya had always considered
very practical, but the queen had never revealed how she did it. Then she had the fairies set up a table
with two chairs, filled with fruits. The queen took her seat and asked, “What do you want?”
“I wanted to inform you and ask for your permission to stay longer in the land of the fairies.”
