Part II: A New Threat

“It would be best if we returned to the palace. You must be very tired.”

“How long was I in the cave?”

“You were there for an entire day. I thought you might never come out. I even considered going back in, even though it terrifies me,” Kiara replied. Abril had gone through hell in that place, and she certainly had

no desire to return.

“Thank you. I know that even thinking about going back in there couldn’t have been easy for you. That cave

is terrifying.”

Cassian was curious about what Abril had encountered in the cave, so he asked, “What was in the cave?”

“The worst of me–my fear, my hatred, my anger, and my selfishness. It’s a horrible place, so never go in

there.”

Abril felt very hungry, extremely tired, and she longed to see Lissana. It had only been a day since she last

saw her, but in that cave, it felt like an eternity.

“Let’s go back. I want to see Lissana.”

When they returned to the palace, two guards intercepted them. “The queen requests your presence.”

Abril and the others followed them to the throne room where the queen awaited. “Greetings, Your Majesty,” they all said in unison.

The queen stared intently at Abril. Upon noticing the two daggers at her waist, she asked, “How did you

come by those daggers?”

“I found them in the cave. I apologize for taking them. They kept appearing in my path and wouldn’t let me

leave the cave, or at least that’s how it seemed. I will return them.”

“No, you may keep them.”

“What?!”

“Those daggers are special. They choose their owner, and it appears they have chosen you. No matter

how much you try to leave them behind, they will always follow you.”

“How is that possible?”

“Those daggers are faerie weapons, created long ago. You could say they are alive, that they have a consciousness. They choose their bearer and cling to them until they die. When that happens, they usually return to the Cave of Dreams and stay there until they find a new bearer. Those weapons are now yours.”

“Can I really keep them?”

“Yes, you can keep them. Consider them your reward for your bravery. Besides, I think you will need them

soon.”

“I see you also acquired the mirrors. I won’t be gifting those to you. You’ll have to return them when you come back for your daughter.”

“I will take good care of them and return them.”

“You’d better. I just wanted to see how you fared in the cave, if that place had broken your mind. But I see it hasn’t, so you may go.”

“I have something to ask. What is that cave, really? Everything I saw there was an illusion, but it felt very real.”

Abril touched her cheek, still bearing the cut inflicted by the creature’s claws, and her body ached as if she had truly fought a life–and–death battle.

“To be honest, I don’t know. Even though it’s within my domain, it’s the only place where my magic doesn’t work. It’s beyond my control.”

“Thank you for answering my question.”

Abril bowed her head slightly and turned to leave, but before she could go, the queen called out, “Human queen.”

Abril turned back when she heard the faerie queen addressing her. “Yes?”

“Those daggers adapt to their bearer. They can become whatever you wish.”

Abril looked at the daggers and asked again, “Are you sure it’s alright for me to keep them?”

“Yes. They are of no use to me. They disappear every time I try to touch them. You are their owner now. If

you wish, I can arrange for someone to teach you how to use them.”

“I would be grateful if you did.”

Abril thanked the faerie queen once more, bid her farewell, and left the throne room. She went straight to

the room where she stayed with her daughter. Upon seeing her little one, she felt immense relief. She ran

to embrace her, taking her from Maya’s arms and showering her with kisses.

“I’ve taken good care of her,” Maya said.

“Thank you.”

“Were you able to find the mirrors?”

“Yes.”

“And was it difficult?”

Just remembering everything she had endured in that cave darkened her expression. “It was, so never go

into that cave.”

“I admit that cave has always piqued my curiosity, but I won’t. Just seeing the look on your face tells me

that place must be worse than I imagined.”

“And it is.”

Maya approached to take Lissana and said, “You look and smell terrible. You should take a bath and eat something. I’ll stay with Lissana while you do.”

Abril didn’t want to be apart from her little one for even a minute. What she had seen in that cave had deeply affected her, but she knew she couldn’t cling to her daughter. She handed Lissana over and said, “I’ll take a quick bath. Please take care of her.”

Alessandro was in his office when Barto burst in suddenly. “Your Majesty! There’s something I must inform you!”

Seeing the worried look on Barto’s face, Alessandro asked, “What is it?”

“It appears that monsters have been seen in the kingdom.”

“What?! Where?!”

“Near the border. Some villages were attacked, and others were…”

“Were what?”

“Were completely destroyed.”

“Did they breach the barrier?”

“No, Your Majesty. They say a miasma appeared suddenly, killing everything it touched. Shortly after, the monsters appeared.”

Alessandro didn’t know how the monsters had reached that place, given the protective barrier, but he didn’t have time to ponder it. “Gabriel, gather the knights. Tell them to prepare and use the blessed weapons and armor. We are going to fight those monsters.”

“It’s unfortunate that the queen isn’t here. She will be needed.”
