“That might be a good idea, although I still need to ensure he has inherited his father’s blood. Blood ties
are important for the succession.”
“I will ask them to come, along with his son.”
The queen’s assistant left and sent a message to Fay’s house, requesting that he present himself at the
palace immediately with his son.
When Fay received the letter, he wasn’t surprised to be summoned to the palace, but he was surprised that they asked him to bring his son Tarik. Tarik was only a year old and wasn’t feeling well that day; he had
been crying all night with a high fever. But Fay couldn’t refuse the Fairy Queen’s order. His wife Lorrei
handed him their little one and said, “Take care of him.”
“I will.”
When Fay arrived at the palace, he saw Maya and the human prince strolling through the garden with a baby in their arms. Fay had heard that Maya had returned but hadn’t had the chance to see her, as he had been on a mission outside the land of the fairies and found his son sick upon his return. Fay approached to greet them briefly before going to the queen.
“Hello Maya, long time no see.”
“Fay, it’s good to see you.”
Cassian never felt comfortable with the friendship between Maya and Fay, as they had once been
engaged. He put an arm around Maya’s shoulders and cleared his throat to catch Fay’s attention, to let him know that Maya was not alone.
“Hello human prince.”

The baby in Fay’s arms caught the attention of both Maya and Lissana, who stretched out her tiny hand as
if she wanted to reach him.
“And who is this baby?”
“This is my son, Tarik.”
“He’s beautiful, although he doesn’t seem well.”
“That’s because he’s not; he’s had a high fever.”
“And why did you bring him to the palace?”
“The queen ordered me to bring him. Even if it’s my son, I can’t disobey.”
Lissana kept stretching her hand, trying to reach Tarik.
“What’s wrong, Lissana?”
“This baby must be the human queen’s daughter. I heard the queen has taken her in.”
“Yes, although I don’t know what’s wrong with her; she usually is very calm.”
“Maybe she’s curious about Tarik.”
“That must be it; she hasn’t seen another baby before.”
Fay moved a bit closer so that Lissana’s small hand could touch Tarik. She grabbed his arm, and a warm light enveloped Tarik. Fay had seen this before; it was the healing magic used by the little one’s mother. Tarik’s fever disappeared. He opened his eyes and stared intently at the little girl in front of him.
“I think she likes Tarik; she healed him,” said Fay.
“She must have sensed he was unwell and tried to reach him for that reason.”
“It’s amazing that at her age she can already use magic.”
“It is indeed.”
The queen’s assistant approached them and said to Fay, “The queen is expecting you; you should hurry.”
“I’ll go right away,” he replied, then turned to Maya. “I have to go, but I’m glad to see you here.”
“I’ve also enjoyed seeing you. Visit me when you have time.”
“I will.”
After Fay left, Lissana started crying, stretching her little arms as if to say not to let him go. Maya soothed her and said, “Don’t cry, Lissana. Tarik can’t stay, but you’ll see him again soon.”
When Fay entered the throne room, the queen said, “Come closer; I want to see your son up close.”
Fay approached as the queen had requested, and she stared intently at his son.
< Part II A New Prince
“He’s a beautiful child.”
“Your Majesty, may I ask why you asked me to bring my son?”
“I need a successor. You have already refused to be one, so I’m thinking of making this child my
successor.”
Fay couldn’t hide his expression; he was reluctant for his son to become king.
“Don’t you want your son to be my successor?”

Fay couldn’t lie; the truth spilled from his lips. “No, I would like my son to be a general, a soldier at the service of our queen, but I don’t want him to be king.”
“Even if you don’t want it, he will be. This child is perfect to be my successor; he has inherited your blood
and can control the power to be king.”
“I will take his place; I will accept becoming king, so please give up the idea of Tarik being king.”
“You don’t want the throne; you never have. Your place is with the swords, on the battlefield. You wouldn’t be a good king, but this child hasn’t chosen his path yet. Teaching him to control the flow of time in the
land of the fairies is much easier.”
“But…”
“I understand you want to lift that heavy burden from your son’s shoulders, but becoming king doesn’t change the fact that he will be a prince, your successor. Don’t delay what is inevitable. Besides, I won’t leave my throne yet; it will be decades or perhaps centuries before I pass it on.”
Fay looked at his little one. The queen was right; even if he didn’t want it, Tarik would be king, sooner or later. What he did wouldn’t change his son’s future.
“Fay, I will take care of your son.”
Fairies couldn’t lie, and those words hid nothing; they were clear and transparent.
“Alright, I will let Tarik be your successor, but I ask that if he ever chooses another path, you don’t stop him from taking it.”
“Fifteen years. I will give him a margin of fifteen years. If in that time he renounces being my successor, I won’t stop him. Does that sound fair?”
“Yes, that sounds fair. Thank you very much, Your Majesty.”

Abril was in her tent, staring intently at the mirror the fairy queen had given her to communicate with
Lissana, when Alessandro entered and asked, “What are you doing?”
“You’ve arrived at a good moment; I want to see Lissana.”
“Is that the mirror you mentioned before?”
“Yes.”
Alessandro sat down beside her and asked, “You seem hesitant, why haven’t you used it?”
“I’m afraid.”
“Afraid it won’t work?”
Abril shook her head. “No, it’s not that. I’ve tested them and I know they work. I’m afraid that Lissana might
have grown too much. Although only a few days have passed here, I don’t know how much time has
passed in the land of the fairies.”
“Everything will be alright, Aby.“”
“Yes, you’re right.”
Abril thought about Lissana and Maya, about how much she wanted to talk to them. For a moment,
nothing happened, and that worried Abril, but soon after, she saw Maya’s reflection, holding Lissana in her
arms.
“Hello, Aby.”
When Lissana saw her mother, she smiled with joy. She seemed very excited to see her and stretched out
her little arms to be held. This broke Abril’s heart; she felt a lump in her throat that made it hard to speak,
and tears threatened to fall.
Alessandro spoke in her place. “Hello, Maya, how is Lissana?”
“Very well, she is a good girl.”
“And how are you?”
“I’ve fully recovered, but I have to be careful because I’m pregnant.”
“Congratulations on your pregnancy, I’m sorry I didn’t say it earlier.”
“I mentioned it on the day of the wedding and then returned to the land of the fairies. Don’t worry about it.”
“And how is Cassian?”
Cassian poked his head in and replied, “I’m doing very well, Lessan. How are you?”
“We’re fine, though we miss you very much.”

Abril wiped her tears and asked, “Are you really okay?”
“Yes, Aby, our days here are very peaceful, and Lissana is growing without any problems. Don’t worry, everything is fine.”
“When we deal with the monsters, I hope to see you again.”
“Do you know how the monster issue started?”
“We’re not very sure yet.”
“Has Cira not attacked yet?”
“No, we still haven’t heard anything from her.”
Cassian said, “I’m sorry for not being with you during these dangerous times. Sometimes I feel guilty for
living my days peacefully while you are suffering.”
“Don’t blame yourself for that, Cassian. You have always helped and protected the kingdom, but right now, that’s where you need to be, with your wife. Besides, it’s thanks to you taking care of Lissana that I can feel
at ease.”
Lissana began to reach for the mirror, seeming to want to speak with her parents since they weren’t paying her attention. Maya focused the mirror on Lissana, and Abril and Alessandro showered their daughter with compliments and sweet words. They spent a good while talking with them before ending the
communication.
Abril kept staring at the mirror, which was now face down in front of her. Alessandro didn’t say anything because he knew perfectly well how Abril felt, as he felt the same way. He simply placed his hand on her back to comfort her, to let her know she wasn’t alone in this.
The next day, before resuming their journey, Alessandro asked Abril, who seemed very distracted, “Aby, are
you alright?”
“Yes, don’t worry, I’m fine.”
“Well, it doesn’t seem like it. You look tired. Today, try not to use your magic unless it’s absolutely
necessary.”
“It’s easier if I help.”
“That’s true when you’re well, but not if you’re not.”
“I’m sorry, I’ve been lost in my thoughts.”
“Don’t apologize, Aby. I understand how you feel. Just remember that you’re not alone and that this won’t last forever. Soon, we’ll have our little one back, I promise.”
Abril hugged Alessandro and said, “I’m sorry, I’ve been thinking only about my feelings and have forgotten yours. You must be going through the same thing, and yet you keep your composure.”

“I had to learn to stay strong in the midst of pain, Aby. Although it wasn’t the best way, during the war, I lost a lot, but I still had to stay strong. I couldn’t afford to falter; the entire kingdom depended on me. But you
don’t have to do that; you don’t have to force yourself to be okay because you’re not alone. I’ll take care of
everything.”
Abril had never thought about what the war had meant for Alessandro, how the darkness had taken much
more from him than she could imagine. She hugged him tightly and said, “You don’t have to take care of everything, Lessan. You are not alone either. I am your wife, your partner; you can lean on me just as I lean
on you. You no longer have to carry everything by yourself.”
“Thank you, Aby.”

Cira tried to reach the Hades key again, but she couldn’t. Her body couldn’t withstand the pressure in that
cave.
She had tried to strengthen herself by consuming darkness. Since the Hades rift had been sealed, she used a well as a channel, because due to its depth, she didn’t need much power to open a temporary door to Hades. All the darkness and monsters that came out were absorbed by her, but her body was still unstable. She still couldn’t reach the key; she needed to find a way to strengthen herself.
When she emerged from the cave, Liona approached to help her, as she could barely stand.
“Did you reach the key, Your Majesty?”
“No, this body is too weak. I can’t reach it.”
“Will you continue consuming monsters?”
“I’ll have to until I can reach it or find a stronger body that can help me get to it, or a body that can
withstand its power.”
