The next day, when Abril woke up, it was already noon. She saw Alessandro sitting at the table by the window. He was staring intently at the stones in a glass jar. She sat on the bed and asked him,

“Lessan, how are you?”

Alessandro put aside what he was doing, approached the bed, kissed Abril on the forehead, and said,

“I’m perfectly fine, and that’s thanks to you. How are you?”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you hungry?”

“Yes, I’ll go ask for the food to be brought to us.”

Alessandro got up and headed to the door. Before he left, Abril remembered the children and said to him,

“The children…”

“Don’t worry about them, I’ve already asked for them to be taken care of.”

“Thank you.”

After Alessandro left, Abril got up. After washing and changing her clothes, she felt curious about the jar of stones that Alessandro had been staring at so intently.

When she picked up the jar in her hands, she felt as if something was pushing her, and she dropped the jar on the floor. From those stones, a dark smoke began to emerge. Instinctively, Abril stepped back, terrified, not knowing what it was.

Alessandro entered and saw the same darkness that had surrounded Baron Terren. He ran to where Abril was to protect her.

“Are you okay?”

“I just wanted to see what was in that jar, but I felt something strange and dropped it. That black smoke started to come out, I’m sorry.”

“Step back, that’s dangerous.”

They both headed to the door, and the smoke moved towards them. At that moment, Abril

heard a voice speaking to her in her head, telling her to use her magic to erase that darkness.

When the darkness got closer to them, Alessandro shuddered. That darkness conveyed something extremely twisted, malevolent. Then Alessandro felt Abril hugging him, and she

said,

“Close your eyes.”

“What?”

“Now.”

Alessandro did as Abril asked, not knowing exactly why, but he trusted her. A blinding light emerged from Abril’s body, and that darkness was erased.

“You can open your eyes now,

She told him, and when Alessandro opened his eyes, he saw that the darkness had completely disappeared.

“What happened?”

Abril didn’t really know what had happened either, she just said before fainting,

“I think I made it disappear.”

Alessandro caught her before she hit the floor, but he heard something else fall, a tinkling as it hit the ground. It was the earrings that limited Abril’s magic; she had removed both of them. Alessandro carried her to the bed, laid her down gently, and quickly put the earrings back on, sealing the magic that had begun to escape.

He gently caressed Abril’s face and called her name several times,

“Abril.”

But she didn’t wake up for the rest of the afternoon. As night fell, someone knocked on the door of the room. When he opened it, Alessandro saw his brother.

Cassian, seeing the worried look on Alessandro’s face, asked,

“Has something happened?”

“It’s Abril…”

“What happened to Abril?”

The hallway wasn’t the best place to talk about what had happened, so Alessandro told his

“You’d better come in.”

When Cassian entered, he saw Abril lying on the bed. He approached, and seeing her pale face, Cassian asked,

“What happened?”

“Yesterday, I brought some strange stones. Abril dropped them, and the darkness emerged. Abril released her magic to fight it.”

Cassian remembered that Maya had spoken to him about the darkness and said,

“You won’t believe this, but I heard about it today.”

“What did they tell you about it?”

“They told me that the darkness was a weapon humans used long ago to defeat the elves, although I don’t really know what that means.”

Alessandro took one of the stones that had previously contained the darkness and showed it

to Cassian.

“Yesterday I discovered that Baron Terren was using street children for experiments. He did horrible things to them and used one of these stones to increase his power, a terrifying and chilling power. Do you think it could be the same?”

“I don’t know, maybe it’s the same thing.”

“What could King Venobich be plotting with all this?”

“King Venobich?”

“Apparently, he was the one who gave such power to Baron Terren.”

“Lessan, in the book they showed me about elven history, all the kingdoms appear, including the kingdom of the elves. On that map, the darkness was marked, and the place where everything apparently started was in the kingdom of Laios, where King Venobich resides.”

“Do you think he’s found that weapon?”

“I think so, although he may not know how to use it very well and that’s why he’s experimenting with it.”

Alessandro ran his hand frustratedly through his hair. King Venobich was already incredibly strong with just his magic; having darkness as a weapon would make him even more

formidable. It seemed dark times awaited them.

This time, the war will be worse than the last. King Venobich doesn’t seem willing to lose

again.

Cassian had always wondered why King Venobich was so determined to conquer Cottet. There were other kingdoms, more prosperous than Cosset, yet he had never attacked other kingdoms; his war had always been with Cosset.

“Lessan, there’s something I’ve been wondering for a while. Why does King Venobich only attack us? What exactly does he want from our kingdom?”

“You’re not the only one who has wondered, Cassian, but I really don’t know. I don’t know what King Venobich wants from our kingdom. I only know one thing: he will never get it. I won’t let him take my kingdom.”
