Dark Times Lie Ahead

When Abril opened her eyes, Alessandro hurried to her side and told Cassian.

“Brother, we’ll continue our conversation later.”

Alessandro took Abril’s hand and asked her.

“Are you feeling alright?”

Abril felt tired, but otherwise she was fine. She tried to sit up, but Alessandro stopped her.

“Don’t get up, your magic got out of control again when you took off the earrings. Why did you take them off?”

“I heard my mother’s voice speaking to me, she told me to do it.”

“That was dangerous. Don’t do it again. I was afraid you wouldn’t wake up again.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you.”

Alessandro caressed Abril’s face and said to her.

“You’re so impulsive, every time I leave you alone, I’m scared to see what you’ve done when I

return.”

“I’m sorry, but I just took the vial out of curiosity. I never imagined something so dangerous was inside.”

“Don’t apologize for that, I shouldn’t have left it here in the first place.”

“What was in that vial? The darkness that emerged from those stones was terrifying.”

“I’m not quite sure what it is, but don’t worry about it now, you need to rest to recover.”

Abril’s stomach growled with hunger, and she said to him.

“I haven’t eaten anything all day, I need food.”

Alessandro laughed and said to her.

guess you never lose your appetite. I’ll have them bring you something to eat.”

Alessandro headed to the door, before leaving he said to her.

“Don’t get out of bed, I’ll be right back.”

“I won’t move from here, so come back soon.”

Alessandro found one of the priests and asked them to bring something light for his wife to eat, and also some fruit.

When he returned to the room, he found Abril had fallen asleep again, so he gently shook her

shoulder to wake her.

“Did I fall asleep?”

“It seems so.”

“I’m sorry, it’s just that when I use my magic, I usually end up exhausted, it always makes me very sleepy.”

“That’s because you still can’t control it, you let too much magic out at once, that’s why you end up exhausted. You just need to rest to replenish your magical power.”

“Have I delayed your trip again?”

“Of course not, I still have some things to do here, so don’t worry, rest as much as you need.”

Shortly after, Abril’s dinner was brought in, pumpkin puree and a handful of grapes. Alessandro helped her sit up in bed and placed the tray on her lap. Abril was about to take the spoon, but Alessandro didn’t allow her to, he took the spoon and said.

“Let me do it.”

“I can eat by myself.”

“Still, I want to do it. Let me.”

Alessandro fed her, and when he was about to give her the grapes, Abril asked him.

“Have you eaten?”

“I’m not hungry.”

Abril popped a grape into Alessandro’s mouth and said,

“You should eat too, or you’ll get sick.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“It’s important to eat well, so don’t skip meals unless you really have to.”

Alessandro kissed her and said,

“Okay, I won’t.”

She returned the kiss and said,

“I’m glad you’re okay, and nothing bad happened to you. When you stood between that darkness and me, I was so afraid of losing you. I don’t know what I would do if something happened to you.”

Alessandro stroked her red hair and said,

“That’s not going to happen.”

“Yesterday you came back injured.”

“But it wasn’t serious.”

“That’s not something that can be controlled.”

“I know I was reckless yesterday and shouldn’t have attacked without a plan. But I couldn’t let them kill and destroy the citizens of my kingdom. I promised to take care of my people; I couldn’t just turn around and leave.”

Abril hugged him, wrapping her arms around his neck. As much as she feared losing him, she knew she couldn’t ask him to abandon his people. She could only be by his side and heal his wounds after each battle.

“Looks like I’ll have to stick around to patch you up.”

“You make it sound like I’m always getting hurt.”

“Almost always.”

Alessandro returned the hug and said,

“That’s not true at all.”

They both stayed embraced for a while, then Alessandro told her it was better for her to rest so she could recover sooner. Abril felt very tired. She listened to what he said, rested her head on the pillow, and soon fell asleep.

When Alessandro confirmed that Abril had fallen asleep, he went to find Cassian. He still had many questions to ask him about what he had mentioned before Abril woke up.

Alessandro knocked on Cassian’s door, and he quickly opened it.

“How is Abril?”

“She’s fine, just tired from using so much magic at once.”

“I’m glad she’s okay.”

“Can I come in?”

“Yes, there are still many things I need to tell you.”

Cassian told him everything Maya had shared about the elves and the half–bloods, something that only made Alessandro even more worried.

“I’ll try to find one of the elves. Maybe that will help us learn a bit more truth about Abril’s lineage.”

“Try to be discreet and don’t mention Abril at any point. We must keep her magic a secret.”

“I will.”

“And try to find out more about the darkness.”

“Yes.”

“If Abril’s feeling better, we’ll leave for the city of Noreth tomorrow.”

“What are you going to do in Noreth?”

“There’s something I want to verify; we’ll be at Marquess Haller’s mansion.”

“This time I might stay a few extra days, and I’ll join you later.”

“We’ll be waiting for you.”

Alessandro returned to Abril. She was deeply asleep, and he got into bed, spending a while looking at her beautiful face before falling asleep.

That night Abril dreamed of her mother again. Whenever she dreamed of her mother, she saw her with a sweet smile, but that day, her brow was furrowed, and her expression was worried.

“What’s wrong, Mom?”

“My child, today you had to fight a very dangerous enemy that shouldn’t exist. Dark times are coming, and you must learn to use your magic and break the remaining seals.”

“How can I break the seals that are left?”

“When you learn to control the magic you already possess at this moment, the next seal will

Abril’s mother said before she woke up. She had woken up before Alessandro, who was still sleeping deeply. As she watched him sleep, Abril wondered what her mother meant; most of the time, she couldn’t understand her. She only hoped her mother was wrong about the dark times coming. For the first time, she was happy and wished with all her heart that it would never change.
