A Home for Children
When Alessandro woke up and saw Abril looking at him, he wrapped his arms around her,
kissed her cheek, and said,
“Good morning, Aby. Why are you awake so early? You should be resting.”
“I just woke up a moment ago.”
“Did you sleep well? Are you feeling rested?”
“Yes, I feel fine now. I’m not as tired as I used to be when using my magic.”
“That’s good.”
ו”
guess so. My mother said I need to learn to control my magic to break the next seal.”
“When did your mother say that?”
“I dreamed of her last night. She also told me that dark times were coming.”
“What?”
“She also said she would teach me what she could, but that everything would depend on me. My magic not only heals wounds, but it also cleanses, purifies, and restores everything to its original form. She told me never to forget that. Sometimes I don’t understand what my mother says; she says strange things.”
“I think your mother just wants to help you and seems to know more than we imagine.”
“I’m scared that this will end, that what we have might be over because of my father or something else.”
“I know, sometimes I’m afraid too, but if we’re in this together, we’ll overcome anything.”
“I’ll try hard to learn to use my magic so I’m not a burden to you, but a help.”
“You’re not a burden to me, and you’re already my help. You’ve saved me several times. If I’m here, it’s because of you. When you found me wounded in the forest, you took care of me, even when I didn’t deserve it because I had been mean to you. You saved me.”
“I couldn’t let you die; you’re my husband.”
“Believe me, anyone else in your place would have let me die. But not you. Your heart is so good and kind; there’s no malice or resentment in it. That’s one of the things I love most about you.”

Abril felt happy to hear those words from Alessandro, to know that she wasn’t a burden to him.
She hugged him and said,
“I know I can’t do much right now, but I’ll try my best without complaining. This time, I won’t protest about my magic lessons.”
Alessandro stroked her hair and said,
“You can do whatever you want. You shouldn’t force yourself to do anything you don’t want to, because I’ll always be there for you, my sweet Aby.”
Alessandro thought for a moment about whether to tell Abril about what he had discovered about her magic, about her roots, but in the end, he decided it wasn’t the right time yet. He would wait a little longer before telling her.
“Are you hungry?”
“Yes, we could have breakfast with the children. I couldn’t see them all day yesterday.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Abril wanted to get up, but Alessandro didn’t let her; he held her in his arms and said.
“Let’s stay like this a little longer. I want to stay by your side a bit more.”
“Don’t you have any work to do?”
“My work can wait a bit longer; there’s no rush.”
After a while, Abril and Alessandro got up and went to see the children, who greeted Abril
with lots of excitement. Joe asked her.
“Why didn’t you come to see us yesterday? We missed you.”
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t feeling very well.”
Joe got scared, fearing that the same thing that happened to his parents might happen to Abril, and asked with tears in his eyes.
“Are you going to die too? Are you going to leave us alone?”
Abril realized she had been careless. For those children who had lost their parents due to an illness, hearing that she wasn’t feeling well must have been alarming. She caressed his cheek and said,

“Of course not, Joe. I’ll be around for a long time; I was just tired. After a good night’s sleep, I’m feeling as good as new.”
“Are you serious? You’re not lying?”
“I’m not lying, I’m fine. I won’t leave you alone, I promise.”
Alessandro said to them.
“Are you hungry?”
“Yes.”
The two children responded at the same time, very excited. They went to the dining room. Cassian joined them and asked Abril.
“Feeling better now?”
“Yes, and how have you been doing? We haven’t spent much time together lately.”
“I’m fine. My leg’s stopped bothering me, so I’m helping Lessan with his work. I want to help out now that I’m back to my old self.”
Alessandro said.
“You’ve always been a help to me, Cassian.”
“Yeah, but it’s not the same as now. I feel more useful than before.”
“Got anything to do today? We could take the kids for a walk around town.”
“Sorry, but I’ve got something to do. I’ll head out after breakfast.”
“Another mission?”
“Yeah, I might be gone for a few days this time.”
“I guess it’ll have to be next time.”
Alessandro said to him.
“If
you want, you can come with me. I think the kids would like to see their friends before we leave town.”
Otis asked.
“Are we leaving?”

“Yeah, we’re just passing through. We’ll leave this afternoon or maybe tomorrow; I haven’t decided yet.”
“My friends, are they okay?”
“Yeah, they’re fine. I’ve made sure of it. This time, they won’t go through any more hardships.”
After breakfast, Alessandro asked for a carriage to be prepared. They gathered at the entrance with Cassian, who had a bag slung over his shoulder, and he said to them.
“I’ll see you in a few days. Don’t get into trouble while I’m away.”
Alessandro responded, “Same goes for you.”
“Take care.”
“Don’t worry, I will.”
Cassian mounted one of the horses that had been saddled for him, rode for a short distance, and then used a teleportation scroll, disappearing. Otis and Joe were very surprised, and Alessandro had to explain to them that Cassian had used magic to disappear, that he hadn’t been swallowed by the ground as they thought.
Soon after, they got into the carriage and headed into town. The carriage took them to a small mansion near the town; Otis recognized it immediately. That mansion belonged to Baron Terren, although it was said to always be empty. He rarely used it, as his main mansion was much larger, although it was a bit further from the town. Upon getting out, Otis
asked.
“What are we doing in this house?”
“This will be the new home for all the children who were kidnapped in Baron Terren’s
mansion.”
“Really?”
“Yes, this place will serve as a home for all those children who don’t have one, so they will no longer be alone. They will have a home and a family, they will no longer suffer from hunger or cold, and everything they need will be provided here.”
Otis began to cry, unable to hold back his tears. He was happy to know that the other children would have a roof to shelter them from the rain and cold, that they would stop living on the streets, scavenging through garbage to eat. Abril placed a hand on his shoulder and asked him.
“What’s wrong, Otis?”

“It’s nothing. I’m just happy that my friends now have a place to call home. Joe and I haven’t been living on the streets for long, but we know it’s not easy. You endure hunger every day, and sometimes you’re mistreated because, to everyone, your life has no value, you’re seen as nothing more than a street rat.”
“That won’t happen to any child again, I’ll make sure of it. I won’t let any other child go through what you had to go through when your parents died, I want to correct that.”
