A Noble Queen

After Otis calmed down, he looked at Onil, who was coming out of the mansion and running towards them. Otis and Joe ran to meet him and gave him a warm hug. While the children had their emotional reunion, Abril approached Alessandro and said to him, What you have done is incredible, thank you for giving all those children a home.

As king, it’s my duty to look after my kingdom, just like you do.

Me?

Yes, you were the first to take in Otis and Joe, you brought them along and have been looking after them, which is something worthy of admiration in a queen.

It was the first time Abril heard Alessandro call her his queen. She looked at him and said,

I’m not a queen.

Of course you are. You’re my wife, and even though you haven’t been officially crowned yet, you will be soon.

Abril had never received a good education. She knew she was ignorant of palace matters and not prepared to be a queen, and she said,

What if I don’t do a good job?

You will do well.

How do you know? I didn’t receive any education. I don’t know how to be a queen.”

Alessandro took Abril’s hand, kissed the back of it, and said,

Being a good ruler isn’t about the education you get, but the kind of heart you have. Your heart is good, that’s why I know you will be an excellent queen, because you care about others, because you want to help them just as I do.

Do you really think I’ll make a good queen?

You won’t become a good queen; you already are one.”

Otis, Joe, and Onil approached Abril and Alessandro. Otis said,

Onil, she is the one I told you about, she is the one who has been taking care of us.

Onil said to her,

Thank you so much for taking in Otis and Joe. Thanks to that, we were able to save the other children from Baron Terren.

Onil addressed Alessandro,

And thank you too, sir knight, for rescuing my friends from that terrible place. Now I see that not all nobles are bad.

Otis responded proudly,

I told you, they are good nobles, they can be trusted.

You’re right, I’m glad I took your advice.

Abril stroked Onil’s head and said,

I’m relieved to know all the kids are okay.

Onil took Abril’s hand and said,

We’re better than okay, come on, I’ll show you.

All the children were playing in the garden, all wearing new clothes. Although they were thin, they had big smiles on their faces and looked extremely happy.

Before, we were alone, but now we have each other.

Otis and Joe saw several children they knew, children who had been living on the streets just like them. The two went to greet them, and Onil followed shortly after. Abril said,

They have all suffered a lot; they have wounds that may leave scars. But even so, they look happy.

Abril looked at Alessandro and said,

Thank you for bringing me on this journey. Even though it hasn’t been so pleasant, seeing these children smile like this makes all the bad things disappear.

One of Alessandro’s guards approached him and said something in a low voice. Then Alessandro said,

I have something to do, I’ll have to leave you alone for a moment.

Don’t worry, I’ll stay with the children.

Alessandro kissed her on the forehead and said,

I won’t be long.

He went inside the mansion, where the butler was waiting for him in the foyer. Upon seeing him, the butler bowed and said,

Your majesty, please follow me.

The butler led Alessandro to a room that seemed to be an office. Alessandro didn’t see anything in that room that could catch his attention, so he asked,

Why have you brought me here?

I have found something that might be of interest to your majesty.

The butler moved one of the books on the shelves, and a door opened, revealing a secret

room.

I found this secret room. I thought it might interest you.

What’s in that room?

I haven’t entered yet, I wanted to wait for your majesty to arrive.

Alessandro entered the room, which was dark since there were no windows. The butler lit an oil lamp and handed it to Alessandro. The room was completely empty except for a book on a pedestal in the middle. He took it out of the room to read; it was a kind of diary.

Leave me alone.

Alessandro ordered as he sat behind the desk to read quietly and without interruptions. The diary talked about experiments and how darkness affected humans, transforming them into terrifying creatures full of evil, into beasts without reasoning.

Alessandro spent hours reading that diary, immersed in the horrors written there. When he saw that the sun had begun to set, Alessandro remembered that he had promised Abril he wouldn’t be long. He left the study and gave the diary to one of his trusted guards, asking him to keep it safe.

He went to find Abril; she was still in the garden, surrounded by the children. They had made a crown of flowers and placed it on her head. Those flowers were white and contrasted with her beautiful reddish hair. The warm and gentle rays of the sun bathed her, and her smile was beautiful, radiant like the sun at its highest point. Every time Alessandro saw her smile, he was filled with happiness; that image was etched in his mind, and he would always remember that moment.

Abril met his gaze; he looked at her intently with a soft expression. She stood up from her

seat and asked the children to excuse her. She approached Alessandro, hugged him, and

said,

You’ve taken so long, I thought you wouldn’t come back.

Alessandro could smell the soft and sweet scent of the flowers on Abril. She had a flower

petal in her hair, which he removed and said,

I’m sorry, I got distracted and lost track of time.

I’ll forgive you only because I was in good company.

Did you have fun?

Yes, a lot.

Do you like children?

Yes, they are full of goodness, and I feel at ease with them.

I suppose when we have our children, you’ll be a very good mother.

Do you think so?

Yes, I’m sure, that’s why we’ll have a lot of children.

How many?

I don’t know, but as many as we can, I want to have a big family.

Although Abril had many siblings, she had never received warmth or kindness from them. In fact, her worst memories were with her siblings, and she shuddered at the thought.

What’s wrong? Don’t you want to have children with me? Have a big family?

Abril, seeing Alessandro’s sad face, realized it wouldn’t be the same, that what had happened with her family didn’t have to repeat itself, especially because she wouldn’t allow it. She smiled at him and said,

Of course I do.

Alessandro kissed her and said,

Since we can’t have children yet, we can practice until that day arrives.

Alessandro said with a mischievous smile,

I love that.
