Cassian wasn’t sure if the man was truly an elf, but he intended to find out. He looked him directly in the eyes and asked, “Are you really an elf?”
Ethan raised his dagger again, and Maya covered her face with her hand, thinking he must be an idiot. Of all the questions he could have asked, he chose that one.
“Who the hell are you?”
“I suppose that’s a yes.”
Before Cassian could say something else foolish and let Ethan get the chance to killed him, Maya intervened.
“Actually, we already knew who you are, but we won’t tell anyone. In the guild, we know how to keep secrets.”
“Well, it doesn’t seem like it.”
“My friend is new to this. He didn’t mean to offend you, right, Cassian?”
“Of course not. I just wanted to confirm your identity to ask my question.”
“What is your question?”
“Do you know anything about the Darkness?”
“What darkness are you talking about?”
“My brother is a knight of the kingdom of Cosset,” Cassian lied.
“A few days ago, he faced a man who was experimenting with Darkness.”
“What? That can’t be! Darkness was defeated centuries ago.”
“Apparently, it isn’t so.”
“Where is that man?”
“Dead. My brother killed him, but that man was just a puppet. The person behind all this is someone else.”
“Darkness is not something a human can handle. If that man isn’t stopped, your world will be turned to ashes.”
“I need more information about it, how to end it.”

“How did your brother end it?”
“With fire.”

“That means the Darkness hasn’t fully awakened yet. When it does, fire won’t be able to stop it; only the power of light can.”
Maya spoke up. “The light magic of the elves?”
“How do you know that?”
“I have a book on elven history.”
“I suppose your father must have taught you the elven language.”
“Yes,” Maya replied proudly.
“You’re right. When the darkness fully awakens, only light magic can defeat it. But the only ones who can use it are the elves, and they have withdrawn from this world due to the greed and evil of humans. They won’t help you this time.”
“But if the darkness is unleashed, you will be affected too.”
“No, this time it won’t be like that. Humans have awakened something that shouldn’t exist. This time it will be your war, not ours.”
As Ethan turned to leave, Cassian called out to him. “Please wait, why are you among humans if you despise us so much?”
“I’m looking for something that was taken from us, and I won’t stop until I find it.”
“What is it?”
“That’s none of a human’s concern; stick to your own affairs and don’t delve into those of my
race.”
Before leaving, Ethan told them, “If you want to win this war that’s coming, kill the one wielding the darkness before it fully awakens, or it will be too late.”
Ethan disappeared among the trees. Maya turned to Cassian, worry etched on her face, and said, “Tell me that what you said about the darkness isn’t true, that it was all a ploy to get information from that elf.”
Cassian knew he couldn’t keep lying, that she deserved the truth. “It’s true; the darkness from your elven history book is real, and soon we’ll have to confront it.”

Alessandro and Abril set out early in the morning to the city of Zather. They arrived around noon at Duchess Mollin’s mansion. She was waiting for them at the entrance, and when they got off the carriage, she bowed and said, “Greetings to Your Majesties.”
“Duchess Mollin, thank you for receiving us.”
“It is an honor for me to host you in my mansion, Your Majesty. Please follow me, you must be hungry.”
The duchess guided them to the dining room, where a grand feast awaited them. The children’s eyes lit up at the sight of so much food, but they stayed behind Abril the whole time, waiting to be told they could sit down. The duchess found them adorable and said to them,
“Please sit down, you must be hungry.”
Abril encouraged the children to sit. She served them a little food on their plates and said,
“Please eat, you must be as hungry as I am.”
Those words encouraged the children, and they began to eat. The duchess asked with a warm smile on her lips,
“Who are these adorable children?”
Otis introduced himself and his brother shyly,
“My name is Otis and this is my brother Joe.”
“What lovely names, your parents must have chosen them with care.”
Remembering their parents, a shadow of sadness passed over Otis’s face, and he replied,
“Yes, they did.”
The duchess recognized that expression on the children’s faces; it was one she knew all too well, the look of someone who has lost a loved one, as she herself had gone through the same, having lost her husband and son in an accident three years ago and had been left completely alone, devastated by the loss, a pain that never fully goes away.
“Children, after eating, would you like to take a walk in the garden? We have several hunting puppies; you can play with them if you wish.”
The children’s eyes shone with excitement, but they first looked at Abril for her permission. She nodded in response, and the children replied at the same time with a yes.
“We’d love to see the puppies.”
