When they arrived at the room, Alessandro embraced Abril and asked her,

“How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine, just a little nauseous from the trip. Using the magical scrolls tires me a bit.”

“That’s because you’re not completely well; they weigh on your body.”

“Though I’m glad the children are okay, I thought they would be unwell.”

“I was surprised too. I think they possess great magical power and resilience. When we arrive, we’ll take them to the temple.”

Abril wobbled, and Alessandro became worried and asked again,

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, after resting a bit I’ll be as good as new.”

Alessandro picked her up in his arms and said,

“Then let’s rest.”

He gently laid her on the bed, lay down beside her, and Abril said to him,

“The Duchess Mollin is a very kind woman.”

“You don’t know her, how can you be so sure of that?”

“By her gaze.”

“By her gaze?”

“She looked at the children with sweetness; there was no disdain or displeasure in her eyes. I

think she truly likes children.”

“You’re not wrong about her. The duchess is a very kind woman, so if you have any questions or need anything, don’t hesitate to ask her.”

“I will. How long will we stay here?”

“This place is near other towns I need to visit. I might have to leave for a day or two.”

“Won’t you take me with you?”

“No, I don’t want you to be in danger. You’ll be safe here. The duchess will take good care of you and the children, and Cassian said he would meet us here.”

Abril placed her hand on Alessandro’s cheek and said,

“I don’t want to stay behind; let me accompany you.”

“No, I won’t let you come with me. It’s dangerous. I don’t want anything bad to happen to you. I’ve already put you in danger too many times.”

“That wasn’t your fault.”

“I know, but if you stay here, nothing bad will happen to you. You’ll be safe.”

Abril saw guilt and worry in Alessandro’s eyes. He blamed himself for all the incidents she had suffered so far. No matter how many times she told him it wasn’t his fault, he wouldn’t stop blaming himself. For him, that was the way to protect her, so she stopped insisting that he let her accompany him.

“Alright, I’ll stay here and wait for your return.”

“I’ll leave tomorrow. Today I’ll stay with you.”

Abril cuddled against his chest and said,

“I’ll be waiting for you.”

Alessandro wrapped his arms around her and stroked her hair until she fell asleep. Then he got up very carefully so as not to wake her and went to find the duchess. She was in the garden watching the children run around with the puppies. Alessandro approached her and

said,

“I’ll be away for a few days. I’ll leave my wife in your care.”

The duchess knew very well why the king said those words to her. If she let anything happen to the queen, her head would soon roll on the ground. She replied,

“You don’t have to worry, I’ll take very good care of her.”

“While she’s here, I’d like you to teach her to dance and everything you can. My wife still doesn’t know the customs and culture of our kingdom, especially teaching her about the etiquette she needs to follow at a ball.”

“I will, Your Majesty.”

The duchess looked back at the children and asked,

Seeing how the king defended his wife, the duchess said.

“If that’s how your majesty feels, you should make it clear to the other nobles by giving the princess her rightful place as queen.”

“I am aware, which is why I plan to hold a coronation ceremony for Abril. I want her to wear the crown of a queen.”
