Chapter 17 Drenched, I’m Doomed

Alicia never expected to run into Austin in such an obscure place as a small cabin boat.
“Thank you, Mr. Burton,” she said politely.
Her voice was naturally gentle, but after all the rocking, it sounded a little breathy. Even when she was just talking normally, her voice had an unintentional pull to it.
Austin’s gaze lingered on her. “Now I get why David was so hung up on you for three years without giving
She blinked. “Mr. Burton, what do you mean?”
He slowly leaned down, his lips drawing closer. The arm at her waist tightened, and the air between them thickened with tension.
His voice brushed her ear, “Ms. Gibson, had David ever warned you not to use that voice when speaking to men?”
Alicia stared at the man before her. His tightened arm brought her body flushed against his. Their position. was as intimate as a couple would get into.
She frowned. “Mr. Burton, let go! Someone might see us.”
He stared at her intently. The palm on her waist burned through her thin dress, and the warmth gradually coursed through her entire body. He demanded, “Why is that bad? Don’t you want to marry me? Wouldn’t this make things official?”
“Mr. Burton, I’m the heiress of the Gibson family.”
“And?”
“I don’t want people talking about me as ‘that woman who crawled into his bed‘. So please show some restraint,” she spoke with gentle firmness but still assertive.
“Alright.”
To her surprise, Austin actually agreed easily, and he released her without warning.
But before Alicia could read his intention, her body had lost its support and tipped straight into the water.
The last thing she saw before falling into the water was the amused smile on his face. He could have saved her, but he didn’t even try to grab her. He simply watched as she hit the water hard.
He even remarked leisurely, “Ms. Gibson, you’re quite something. You’re here as a guest and even showed me a diving act. But your splash technique needs some work.”
Alicia surfaced. Her hair came loose, and water dripped down her face. Her face glittered like crystal under the sun.
Floating among the green leaves, she looked like a water enchantress.

But her pretty face was tinged with anger now. She no longer cared about her composure.
“Aus-”
Before she could finish, Austin crouched at the edge of the boat and shoved a finger into her mouth, silencing her.
She was thrown off and frozen to the spot. What on earth is he doing?! Who puts their–finger in someone’s mouth like that?
Already furious, she snapped her jaws shut and bit down hard.
Just as her teeth sank in, she heard someone shouting from the opposite bank, “Mr. Burton, I heard a big splash. Do you need help?”
Only then did she grasp his intent. Fortunately, the servant was across the water, and she was hidden under the layers of water lily leaves.
Her nerves were taut. She watched the servant’s movements and forgot to spit his finger out.
Her clear eyes stayed locked on Austin. In turn, he couldn’t help but swallow as he stared at her pitiful
stance.
He replied deeply, “I’m alright. I was bored and threw a rock into the water. Everything’s fine here. You can go.”
“Yes, Mr. Burton.”
Once the servant was gone, even the lightest brush of contact left Alicia’s ear burning. However, he didn’t seem affected by it at all. She truly couldn’t read him.
When they first met, he seemed composed but had a hidden predator side to him. Yet he was gentle in bed and was attuned to her emotions. She had an exceptional experience.
But he appeared at the hospital later on and offered to take responsibility for her. She thought he was a little unhinged at that time. So she was irritated by him when they bumped into each other at the airport. She always hated clingy men.
Once she found out who he was, she approached him but was rejected. Now he was teasing her cruelly.
What kind of man is he exactly?
She didn’t have time to ponder this and grabbed the boat’s edge to climb up. The boat rocked, and she lacked the core strength. So, her feet fell back into the water before she could catch them on the edge, causing another splash. Water dripped down her chin.
Meanwhile, Austin was crouched above her. He was in a white shirt with two buttons undone, and sleeves rolled to his elbows. Without a watch, he looked more casual and friendly.
His dark eyes followed her every move before he reached out a hand. “Need a hand, Ms. Gibson?”
