Lydia tuned them out entirely.
Work for The Foster Group? In his dreams.
Her silence seemed to satisfy Frederick, and he didn't press the issue further.
Once he got that court notice and read her divorce petition, he'd realize demanding she quit was completely pointless.
When they arrived at Tidal Crest Manor, she saw Sierra parading around in a sheer silk nightgown. She was completely numb to the spectacle by now.
Sierra would make damn sure Frederick didn't come anywhere near her.
Which was absolutely perfect.
The next morning, she got ready for work, only to discover the white Ferrari she had valet-parked last night was gone.
"Gable, where's my car?"
"Ma'am, Ms. Sutton drove it away," Gable said, looking thoroughly disgusted. "Mr. Foster gave her the keys."
Fury spiked in Lydia's chest.
Was Sierra a kleptomaniac?
She stole her husband, stole her jewelry, and now she was stealing her car. Was there anything she wouldn't steal?
She went to confront Sierra to get her keys back, only to find the girl had blocked her on every messaging app.
Her phone rang.
"Harrison, I'm on my way," she answered.
Lydia hung up.
Today's schedule was packed: hosting international scientists for a campus tour, visiting the institute, and checking out the semiconductor chip factory to foster cross-border collaboration.
She would deal with Sierra tonight.
She grabbed the keys to a Porsche from the garage and sped off to Averton University to meet Harrison.
Inevitably, she bumped into Colton Witt again. It seemed her harsh warning from the night before had done the trick; he steered clear of her.
In the afternoon, Harrison officially signed the Quantum Tunneling Tech licensing agreement with The Delphi Institute.
An annual fee of fifteen million dollars.
Lydia would be in charge of the technical handover.
After a brief break, the delegation headed to a semiconductor factory owned by the Ford family.
In terms of sheer production volume, they were leaps and bounds ahead of the international factories.
Their cost-efficiency was unmatched.
However, their nanometer precision was lacking, making the chips only suitable for low-end electronics.
The two sides spent hours discussing tech and machinery.
She could feel the underlying arrogance radiating from the foreign scientists, which rubbed her entirely the wrong way.
Walking out of the factory, she was stunned to see her white Ferrari parked in a spot facing the ocean.
Sierra and Frederick were standing nearby, chatting casually in the sea breeze. As she got closer, she heard Sierra making grandiose claims about taking The Foster Group's new institute to unprecedented heights, while Frederick nodded in agreement.
Lydia couldn't stomach another second of it. "Give me my keys back."
A loud tearing sound ripped through the air.
The fabric of Sierra's dress, caught in Frederick's grip, tore completely from the violent force.
"Ahhhh!"
Their screams echoed across the pier.
Splash!
They both plunged into the deep water.
Her body felt completely disconnected, tossed around violently by the churning currents.
She broke the surface, gasping, only to hear Harrison's panicked shouts. "Lydia! Lydia can't swim!"
Two heavy splashes followed in quick succession—one close, one further away.
Through the stinging saltwater, she saw Frederick. Pure survival instinct kicked in, and she reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind.
The very next second, he violently twisted and shoved her away.
She watched in horror as he wrapped his arms protectively around Sierra, hauling her toward a life preserver floating nearby.
A suffocating wave of despair crashed over her.
She hadn't achieved her dreams. She hadn't stayed to watch her mother grow old...
The sickening realization that they weren't divorced yet hit her. He would be the one handling her funeral. She would be buried in the Foster family plot. Her soul let out a wretched scream.
She refused to die like this. She thrashed wildly, but her body was sinking fast. As the water pulled her under, she saw Frederick secure Sierra onto the life ring and suddenly turn back...
