During dinner, Lydia sat quietly, putting on a polite front for Charles.
Seraphina Gates walked over with a stack of photos. "Honey, you have to fly back to Kingsleigh tomorrow."
"We barely had time to talk."
"Since you're here, take a look and see which of these outstanding bachelors would be a good match for Felicity."
"Felicity is twenty-six this year."
"Let's narrow down the list now, so we can set up the dates as soon as she returns."
She was talking about her precious daughter, Felicity Foster.
"No need to choose." Charles raised a hand, and the butler immediately swept the photos away. Seraphina looked visibly annoyed but held her tongue with so many people present.
"Why not?"
"I already have someone in mind," Charles said.
"Who? Is he really better than the men I picked?"
"The third son of the Ford family, Xavier."
Hearing that name, Lydia's eyelashes fluttered.
The scene at the airport flashed through her mind.
He had pushed her away, but she had ended up crashing right back into his arms.
She had lost completely control of her emotions, somehow finding herself curled against him.
And he had actually held her...
His cool cheek had pressed against her skin. The hand on her back had been burning hot, slowly tightening to wrap her securely in his embrace.
At the memory, the air suddenly felt too thin to breathe, and a faint flush crept up her cheeks.
"Didn't he just get engaged a couple of days ago because Grandma Eleanor is critically ill?" Seraphina's voice snapped her back to reality.
Lydia clutched her water glass, taking small sips to cool the sudden heat in her chest.
"Critically ill?" Charles looked surprised. "Engaged?"
"I just spoke with Old Man Ford yesterday and asked after Eleanor."
"He said she was doing quite well."
At that, Lydia's hand froze. The water slipped past her lips, sending her into a coughing fit.
The people at the table gave her a brief glance before turning away. Frederick, sitting right beside her, didn't even flinch.
She grabbed a napkin and stood up, excusing herself to the restroom to freshen up.
Charles and Seraphina's conversation drifted after her.
"Maybe it was just a trick Eleanor pulled to force him into marriage."
"If Xavier claims he's engaged but hasn't brought anyone home, he's probably just making excuses to get them off his back."
"No one has actually seen his fiancée. She might be completely made up."
"Even if there is a woman, if he won't bring her home, she's probably someone completely inappropriate."
"The Foster Group is expanding overseas. If we can secure an alliance with the Fords through marriage, it will absolutely benefit our future ventures."
"Of course, my main priority is Felicity's happiness. But I need to meet Xavier first, to see if his character and looks truly live up to the rumors of his brilliance."
