Knowing Charles was obsessed with her mother, Lydia's eyes instinctively darted to Julian Zane, who was sitting right there.
Julian still had absolutely no idea.
"Charles, my mom and Julian tied the knot a few days ago. They're hosting a reception soon. Do you think you can make time to come?" she blurted out.
Both Madeline and Julian looked surprised, but Charles's warm smile completely froze on his face.
A split second later, Charles forced a smile. "When I get back from Kingsleigh, if time permits, I'd love to drop by for a toast."
"You silly girl, why are you blurting everything out?"
"Charles is a very busy man," Madeline scolded her gently, though a natural, shy blush crept onto her cheeks.
Her mother was so happy with Julian.
She wouldn't let anyone destroy that.
"I'm not exactly a stranger," Charles replied flatly, getting to his feet. "It's getting late. I should go."
"I'll walk you out, Mr. Foster," Julian offered.
"It's fine, Julian," Lydia cut in. "I'll walk him out."
"I won't be staying the night."
"Okay, your dad is here, so you don't need to worry," Madeline replied.
Seeing Julian beaming from ear to ear because she had called him 'dad', Lydia felt a surge of warmth.
She turned and escorted a dangerously quiet Charles out the door.
At the hospital entrance, she watched Charles's car drive off.
Lydia took a cab back to Moonlight Cove. She had promised Daniel she would be patient, but there was no way she could live under the same roof as Frederick.
Besides, Frederick was likely tangled up with Sierra right now and wouldn't even notice her absence.
That night, every time she closed her eyes, the terrifying, freezing ocean roared in her mind. The suffocating dread jerked her awake three separate times.
Tossing and turning, she eventually gave up and walked out onto the balcony, instantly locking eyes with Xavier, who was standing on the opposite balcony in loose silk pajamas.
Before she could decide whether to wave, Xavier broke eye contact and retreated inside.
She curled up on the balcony swing, watching the sky gradually lighten, and eventually drifted off to sleep.
The blinding morning sun woke her up. Surprisingly, she was wrapped in a soft blanket from the neck down.
