But they had been happy in the early days of their marriage...
She leveled a freezing glare at Sierra. "Family? You think you're worthy of that?"
"You and your mother are both shameless homewreckers who ruin families just to steal what isn't yours."
Sierra bristled, her voice rising in pitch. "The one who isn't loved is the real homewrecker!"
Love?
Frederick's love.
She didn't want it anymore.
Thinking of the fake divorce certificate in her bag, she let out a scoff. "Are you really so sure he's going to marry you?"
"Of course he is!" Sierra shot back defensively. "He hasn't dumped you yet because he needs to keep the company's stock stable. The second The Sutton Group and The Foster Group merge and go public, you're out!"
In thirty days, once Freddie got that divorce certificate, he was definitely going to marry her.
Then, she would be the real Mrs. Foster.
And Lydia would be nothing but tossed aside trash.
Watching Sierra practically stamp her feet in rage, Lydia turned and walked away without an ounce of emotion.
Whether he married Sierra or wanted a divorce had absolutely nothing to do with her anymore.
She was leaving him.
She got back into her car and returned Harrison Zane's call.
"Harrison, I've decided to join your research team. I'm coming to Silicon Valley to work on the project."
They had studied under the same mentor. Harrison was a leading expert in the semiconductor field, dedicating his life to developing sub-nanometer microchips.
Over the phone, Harrison sounded both surprised and relieved. "I'm glad you finally came around. But what about your mother-in-law?"
He knew exactly how desperately Lydia had always wanted a real family.
After getting married, she had shifted her entire focus to her domestic life, stepping away from the scientific community.
But he had never wanted to give up on her.
She was, without a doubt, the most gifted scientist he had ever encountered. That was why he had continuously invited her to join the Horizon Research Institute.
However, the Fosters were elite billionaires with incredibly strict rules.
Leaving the country for a year would certainly draw complaints from the Foster family.
Lydia understood his hesitation, but her tone was absolute. "That's not going to be a problem anymore."
Harrison got the hint. "Good. Get your passport ready and give it to me tomorrow morning so I can process your visa. The team heads out in thirty days."
"I'll also introduce you to our primary partner, Mr. Ford."
"His views on quantum tunneling align remarkably well with yours. I think you two will have a lot to talk about."
It was only later she realized that Seraphina's hostility was entirely because of Frederick.
"What are you standing there for?"
"You have absolutely zero concept of time. Making all of us wait for you. Go to the kitchen and see if dinner is ready."
Hearing Seraphina's sharp reprimand, Lydia met Sierra's mocking gaze before looking directly at Frederick.
He wasn't Seraphina's biological son, and while they maintained a peaceful facade, they constantly clashed behind closed doors.
Before, whenever Seraphina gave her a hard time, Frederick would always stand up for her.
Now, he sat there in complete silence, tacitly approving of Seraphina's abuse.
Worse still, right in front of everyone, the usually untouchable, arrogant man personally poured Sierra a cup of tea, tending to her every need.
He was crushing every last ounce of her pride.
Her heart turned completely to ice. She spun on her heel and walked out.
Averton in March was locked in a relentless, pouring rain.
Lydia's soaked body shivered violently in the freezing wind.
Once she got home, she tossed the fake certificate back into the safe and drafted two identical copies of a real divorce agreement.
Tomorrow was their second wedding anniversary, and she was going to divorce Frederick Foster.
