Lydia followed Alice to the conference room, her mind racing. Was Frederick planning to publicly announce their divorce and his intention to marry Sierra?
The man and woman sat side-by-side. The wealthy society wives who sat on the charity foundation's executive board looked rather uncomfortable, entirely subdued by Frederick's overwhelming presence.
“Mr. Foster, the executive members of the foundation must meet two criteria. First, they must be the wife of a recognized philanthropist. Second, they must have personally donated at least one million dollars. Ms. Sutton meets neither of these requirements. We simply cannot approve her admission,” the vice-chairman explained.
The man merely lifted his chin.
Standing beside him, Caleb handed a check to the vice-chairman.
“This is for three million dollars. That should cover it.” Frederick turned his gaze to her.
“As for being a philanthropist's wife?”
“I'm certain whoever Sierra marries in the future will fit the bill.”
At these words, Sierra adopted a look of bashful innocence. The board members exchanged loaded glances. Mr. Foster was throwing serious money to secure her a spot in the foundation and boldly hinting about her future husband. It was glaringly obvious what he meant.
Just last night, after reading the Foster Group's press release, they all assumed Lydia's status as the official wife was unshakable. Some had even privately mocked Sierra. But barely a day had passed, and the winds had shifted once again.
It seemed those recent gossip articles hadn't been baseless after all. Sierra really might be the next Mrs. Foster.
The vice-chairman accepted the three-million-dollar check and looked at Lydia awkwardly. “Mrs. Foster, what are your thoughts?”
Since she was on the verge of divorce and he was gearing up to marry Sierra, he probably didn't want to see her at the Foster Group anymore either. Wasn't this just paving the way for Sierra to take over?
But looking at the smug, mocking smirk on Sierra's face, Lydia remembered the vicious voice memo Cecilia had sent that triggered her mother's heart attack. Yes, she was stepping down from the foundation, but she wasn't about to hand it over to Sierra without a fight. “If anyone can buy their way onto the board, this foundation will lose all credibility.”
