From His Invisible Wife to the World's Icon novel Chapter 71

Her hands balled into tight fists, the raw pain radiating from her injured fingers straight to her chest, yet even so, she couldn't find a single trace of emotion in the man's eyes.

She shook off his grip and walked toward the service desk with Joanna.

"Hi, I'm Lydia Sterling. I'm here to give a statement."

"Ms. Sterling, please follow us to the interrogation room," the officer said.

"Alright."

She gave a faint nod.

From behind, Sierra's panicked voice rang out. "Frederick, what are we going to do?"

"Don't worry, I won't let anyone frame you."

Frederick's voice was absolute and gentle—the exact tone he used when sparing no effort to protect someone.

He used to protect her like that, too.

He had a dark, aloof personality, ruthless in the business world, reserving his only sliver of tenderness for her.

Others meant nothing; only she had been special.

But when that tenderness was no longer hers, his coldness... was enough to destroy her.

Perhaps it had been a mistake from the very beginning.

She shouldn't have been greedy for that special treatment. She should have chosen someone who was inherently good, rather than someone who treated only her well while being endlessly cruel to everyone else.

For some reason, Xavier crossed her mind.

Reining in her emotions, Lydia walked into the interrogation room with Joanna by her side. Aside from bumping into Xavier, the rest of her statement was identical to before.

"Ms. Sterling, the two suspects and Alice May are in custody and have confessed to everything. However, they claim they don't know Ms. Sutton and have no contact information for her," the officer explained. "That night, she was inseparable from your husband, Mr. Foster. She never interacted with the two suspects or Alice."

The drugs had been coursing through her veins at the time, leaving her delirious.

Could she have misheard?

"Why did they target me?"

"According to their confession, they wanted to take compromising photos to blackmail you for money."
