From His Invisible Wife to the World's Icon novel Chapter 80

She shifted toward the edge of the mattress, but a heavy arm suddenly draped over her waist, pulling her flush against an incredibly cold chest.

She couldn't help but shiver, and not just from his body temperature.

His physical touch terrified her.

She squeezed her eyes shut, fighting off the revulsion.

Too afraid to wake her mother, she planned to wait until he fell asleep to sneak out of the room.

Instead, the man suddenly let go, tucking the blankets securely around her shoulders. "Go to sleep."

Two simple words.

She rested her head on her hands, breathing in that clean, crisp scent that belonged exclusively to him.

The last time they had slept in the same bed felt like a lifetime ago, back when they were newlyweds.

Memories drifted past her eyes like fleeting clouds.

"When you found out I was being drugged, did you ever even think about investigating it?" she asked.

But she already knew the answer.

His dead silence was her reply.

He hadn't.

She laid there with her eyes wide open until the sun came up.

Just as they were about to head out, she got a call from Joanna's father. Her breath hitched. She hung up and turned to her mother. "Mom, you and Julian go ahead to the registry office. I have to stop by the hospital."

"What's wrong?" her mother asked nervously.

"Joanna got into a car crash." She suddenly remembered the thick smoke she had seen rising from the intersection near the hospital yesterday. Was that Joanna's car?

Why hadn't she told her?

"Is it serious?"

"Mr. Quinn said she's physically fine, but for some reason, she's refusing to eat or drink. He wants me to go talk some sense into her."

"Lydia, you go on ahead. Our appointment is at eleven, and your stepdad and I still need to get our checkups done. Daniel will be here soon anyway. Between him and the nurses, you have nothing to worry about."

"Okay."

Grabbing her purse, she bolted for the door, only to have her path blocked the second she stepped out of the courtyard.

She glared at Frederick, who was casually lounging on the sofa reading the newspaper.

She immediately recognized the man blocking her path. It was Griffin, Frederick's most trusted and elite bodyguard.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Was he seriously going to have Griffin tail her 24/7?

Frederick folded his newspaper and turned to her mother and stepdad. "Mom, Julian, I'll meet you guys over there when it's time."
