Chapter 51 A Question He Dares

He was actually sitting there, lowering himself, patiently peeling shrimp for her.

Seraphina took a sip of soup, her expression neutral. “You don’t have to,” she said. “I have hands. I can peel them myself.”

The server froze and covered her mouth.

Did she hear that right? The girl just rejected him. Flat-out. The big boss, turned down in public.

Was she about to witness something she shouldn’t? Would she be silenced for it?

The server quickly set the dishes down and bolted out of the room, terrified she might be a second foo slow and pay for it with her life.

Cassian didn’t stop.

He kept peeling, completely unfazed, the corner of his mouth still lifted in a faint smile.

Before long, a full plate of shrimp sat in front of Seraphina, piled high like a small mound.

He reminded her gently, “Seafood can be hard on your stomach. Don’t eat too much. You don’t want to upset it.”

Don’t eat too much? Then why peel this much?

“Thanks.”

Cassian caught the unspoken complaint immediately. His eyes and brows softened.

He watched her from the side. Bright features. A graceful profile. A long, elegant neck. Skin so smooth it looked unreal, almost like polished stone.

His thoughts drifted.

Before he could stop himself, he leaned in slightly. “Do you feel even a little something for me?”

His voice was calm and gentle, carrying a quiet, dangerous pull. Seraphina turned her head and met his

gaze.

Dark eyes, restrained emotion beneath them, fixed on her without blinking.

Calling it tangled feelings didn’t feel like an exaggeration.

She hesitated. This was a hard question. One she genuinely didn’t know how to answer. She shook her

head.

Cassian’s heart sank hard, dropping deeper and deeper. The air seemed to freeze. They looked at each other.

His throat moved as he swallowed. Still unwilling to give up, he asked, “Not even a little?”

She answered honestly. “I don’t know.” Or maybe she just had never seriously thought about it.

Hearing that, Cassian finally let out a breath. So the head shake didn’t mean no. It meant uncertainty. That was good. That meant there was still a chance.

Seraphina felt conflicted too. He kept confessing. She kept not responding.

Did that count as leading someone on? If it did, it felt wrong.

And he was already twenty-eight. Not young anymore.

If her hesitation delayed his future, marriage, family, wouldn’t that make her the problem?

She thought about it for a long time. The question really was tricky. “Just a suggestion.” she said carefully. “Maybe you should try pursuing someone else.”

With his looks and money, he could probably find someone easily.

Cassian went completely still.

“What if you keep trying with me,” she added, “and I still don’t say yes in the end? Wouldn’t that just waste your time?”

A quiet bitterness rose in his chest.

She really was inexperienced. She didn’t understand that love didn’t work on replacements.

He didn’t want to pressure her into thinking about things she couldn’t figure out yet.

He reached out and lightly patted the top of her head. “It’s okay. No rush. We’ve got time.”

If she took one step toward him, he would gladly run the remaining ninety-nine. Or if no one ever appeared beside her, he would stand right where he was and wait, without regret.

His phone rang.

Cassian pulled his gaze back, glanced at the caller ID, and stood up to take the call outside.

“Cassian, how did it go? Are you satisfied with the girl?” Celestine asked. She had heard from the coordinator that he hadn’t stood her up, and that the girl seemed pleased.

She was so emotional she nearly teared up. Finally. Her hopeless son had woken up.

Cassian replied in a tone completely unlike his usual self. “Celestine, thank you.”

If it weren’t for her arrangement, he wouldn’t have crossed paths with Seraphina at all.

Celestine went blank. Was this really her son? Back when she forced him on blind dates, they nearly cut

ties.
