From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10

“Steve, save me! Please save me!” Isabel screamed again, finally snapping Steve out of it.

Her shrill cries also drew Dorothy over.

When Dorothy saw me pinning Isabel to the wall and slapping her mercilessly, she ran over and yelled at me. “You bad woman! Let go of Mommy, you evil lady!”

She kept repeating those words as she cried and shouted.

By then, I had completely lost my reason. I didn’t bother holding back against Dorothy, the culprit who had made this whole mess. I shoved her aside and kept hitting Isabel.

Even when Isabel’s face was swollen beyond recognition with blood smeared at the corner of her mouth, it still couldn’t ease the hatred tearing through my chest.

What had my child ever done wrong that her ashes ended up scattered on the ground so carelessly?

Shoved to the ground, Dorothy immediately burst into loud sobs.

Just then, a powerful force spun me around. The next second, a sharp slap landed across my

face.

I stared in shock at the man standing before me with a grave expression. This was the man whom I had loved since the age of five until I was 25.

For Isabel and her child, Steve had laid a hand on me.

Why was it that no matter what they did, the one who ended up punished was always me?

“Zara…” It seemed even Steve himself was startled by what he had done.

His tone softened slightly as he said, “I’m sorry. I… I just wanted you to calm down.”

I looked at him quietly and asked relentlessly, “Why? Why destroy even the last bit of memory

I have of my child? Give my child back to me! Make her give my child back to me!”

I screamed at the bewildered Steve, my hysterical bellow akin to the howl of a trapped beast.

The next moment, I staggered over to the box as if something had just occurred to me. I dropped to my knees and tried to gather the ashes back inside.

It was an impossible task. I couldn’t pick them up at all.

I had lost my baby completely. My tears fell onto the ashes scattered across the floor,

darkening the tiny grains and carving a wound in my heart that would never heal.

Nearby, Steve was holding Dorothy and checking anxiously to see if she had been hurt in the

fall.

But what about my baby?

He didn’t even spare a glance at her. Did he feel no pain at all?

Steve had been the one to propose marriage. He and his mother, Simone Jensen, had been the ones urging me to have a child.

Why was it that I was the only one left to suffer in the end?

My gaze landed on a golf club leaning against the couch in the living room. I walked over, grabbed it, and headed straight for the private chapel.

Isabel and Dorothy had destroyed the most important thing in my life. I couldn’t kill them, but I could destroy what mattered most to Steve.

I would make him feel the same pain!

The golf club came crashing down again and again onto the statue of Jesus. The gilded figurine cracked and shattered, breaking into glittering fragments.

This entire chapel and everything inside it had been custom-designed and built at an enormous expense under Steve’s command. I destroyed it like a madwoman. The shattering and breaking sounds mirrored the screams inside my heart.

I no longer cared about sacrilege, and I no longer cared about divine retribution. If there really was such a thing as retribution, then why weren’t Steve and Isabel the ones being punished?

By the time Steve snapped out of it and rushed into the chapel, all he saw was the devastating ruin on the floor. Meanwhile, I was still destroying everything in sight.

“Zara!”

Steve looked as though he had lost control, too. He rushed over and yanked the golf club from my hands. Forcefully, he flung it aside and raised his arm.

But then, he forced himself to stop. So, the slap never came.

A mocking smile tugged at my lips. “What’s wrong? Can’t bring yourself to hit me?”

As Steve froze, not knowing what to say, I slapped him hard across the face.

This was what he owed my child and me. And what he owed us was far more than just this one

slap.

If Steve had grieved the way I did, or if he had felt even a fraction of my pain, I would never have broken down like this. But all he ever did was fuss over Isabel and Dorothy, but never shed a single tear for my baby.

Steve wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and ordered coldly, “Zara has lost her mind. Take her back to her room and let her calm down.”

Everything I had just endured had drained every last bit of strength from me. I had no energy left to resist. Without another word, I walked toward my room like a soulless husk.

I hadn’t gone far when I heard Isabel’s voice behind me. “Steve, my face is all swollen. How am I supposed to film next month? Dorothy didn’t do it on purpose, and she’s just a child. Was it really necessary for Ms. Yaxley to go batshit crazy?”

Steve replied in a grim voice, “She’s a child, but what about you? You’re an adult. What were you doing earlier?”

Back in my room, my body was still trembling even after an hour had passed.

Maria knocked on the door and came in, holding the box in her hands.

She sighed and said, “Mr. Griffin’s instructed me to pick up whatever could be salvaged. I searched around for a long time and only managed to gather this much.”
