From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

1/4

All the vegetarian dishes the chef had spent an entire morning preparing were completely obliterated in the face of my steak and foie gras. No matter how exquisite those dishes looked, they paled in comparison to my food.

Isabel and Dorothy had been having vegetarian food alongside Steve over the past two days. They were staring so hard that their eyes practically popped out.

Isabel swallowed visibly, while Dorothy looked like she was about to drool.

Only Steve spoke up coldly. “Who gave you permission to bring all this into the house?”

I let out a scoff and shot back, “You bought this villa after we got married, didn’t you? That makes it marital property. Since half of it is mine, why can’t I eat whatever I want on my own territory?”

Without another word, I walked over to the wine cabinet and took out a ridiculously expensive bottle of red wine he had won at auction last year. Then, I poured myself a glass.

Under Steve’s piercing gaze, I sat down and elegantly cut into my steak.

I took one bite of steak and followed it up with a sip of red wine.

Ah, it was pure bliss!

The moment I lost my marriage, it felt like I had suddenly regained everything else.

But Steve had never been one to tolerate provocation.

He ordered the bodyguards, “Throw her food out.”

Just as his words fell, Dorothy tugged timidly at his sleeve with a pitiful expression. “Daddy… I

-I want steak too…”

She swallowed several times in a row. Tears welled up in her doe eyes as she asked, “Why can’t

we eat meat?”

Steve was stumped. Even if he explained the principles he adhered to because of his faith to Dorothy, it would be futile since she was still too young to understand.

Quick to curry favor, Isabel stepped in. “Dorothy, Daddy’s doing this for our own good. Eating vegetarian food is healthier. People who eat meat all the time get lots of illnesses.”

I continued enjoying my meal and nodded seriously. “Sure. Save all the suffering for me. You all enjoy your good health.”

Glancing at Steve’s gradually darkening expression, I smirked and teased, “Don’t tell me watching me eat this is making you crave it too? Is that why you’re in such a hurry to throw my food out? Are you afraid you won’t be able to control your mortal desires and break your vows, Mr. Griffin?”

Steve glanced at me and continued eating his vegetarian meal with a stoic expression. He didn’t tell the bodyguards to throw my food away again.

Isabel and Dorothy forced themselves to eat the vegetarian meal with him, though their eyes kept drifting toward my food.

This was easily the most satisfying meal I had had in years. After eating and drinking my fill, there was still the pizza left completely untouched.

Dorothy stared at it with a pout, her intentions painfully obvious.

Sure, kids were innocent. But what if she ate my food and got sick? What if she threw up or had diarrhea? Steve would surely accuse me of trying to harm her.

Under Dorothy’s hopeful gaze, I called Maria over and instructed, “Take this and feed it to the stray dogs in the neighborhood.”

The moment I said that, Dorothy’s eyes dimmed. I wasn’t sure if it was my imagination, but it seemed like even Isabel looked a little disappointed.

After all, the media and paparazzi were swarming to her lately. She didn’t dare step outside the

villa. That meant she had to keep eating vegetarian with Steve

Could it be that they had been eyeing my leftovers?

The thought almost made me laugh out loud.

I took a napkin and wiped my mouth leisurely.

Before leaving the table, I looked over the spread of vegetarian dishes and said to Isabel, From now on, you can have all this good food to yourself. Enjoy them, alright?”

If I had known what kind of consequences this little lunchtime episode would bring me, I might never have done it.

That afternoon, I went to the hospital to see my biological mother. Ever since the car accident when I was five left her in a coma, she had been receiving treatment here.

She lay peacefully on the hospital bed, just as always. The doctor said the same thing as before.

There was little hope she would ever wake up. Being able to barely maintain her vital signs like this was already a blessing.

Even so, I sat by her bed and talked to her for a long time. I told her about my marriage to Steve and about how I pretended to be detached. But actually, I felt lost and terrified about the

future.

In the evening, I received a call from Maria.”Mrs. Griffin, something terrible has happened! Please come back quickly!”

She sounded so frantic that it seemed as if the sky had fallen. When I asked what had happened, she stammered and couldn’t bring herself to say anything coherent.

A terrible premonition gripped me. I grabbed my bag and rushed back to the Griffin villa.

The moment I stepped inside, I heard Maria arguing with Isabel. “Put the vacuum down right now! Wait for Mrs. Griffin to come back and handle this! You’ve gone too far!”

“Can’t you see the floor’s dirty?” Isabel replied coolly, her voice laced with a hint of threat. How can you leave this mess here? You’re awfully loyal to Zara, but don’t forget who pays your salary. If Steve comes back and sees this, do you think he’ll be happy?”

I hurried into the living room.

The wooden floor was scattered with specks of gray and white, looking like an untimely

snowfall.
