Chapter 13
Before Juliet and I could say another word, Steve pushed the door open and walked in. He had arrived so suddenly that we didn’t even have time to exchange a look, let alone come up with a plan.
Seeing Juliet in my room didn’t surprise him much. But when his gaze landed on Hillary, a suspicious look flickered in his
eyes.
Afraid he might notice something, Juliet quickly improvised and explained, “This is one of Zara’s former colleagues. She heard Zara was sick and came to check on her. Don’t worry. She’s very tight-lipped. She won’t say a word about you two being secretly married.”
“Hello, Mr. Griffin,” Hillary greeted him calmly while smiling courteously without giving anything away.
Steve gave her a curt nod and shifted his attention to Juliet.
His tone was light, yet it carried an unmistakable air of authority. “My daughter will be attending Sanctus Kindergarten from now on. Take good care of her and make sure she isn’t upset there.”
After saying that, he didn’t seem to have anything else to say.
Juliet froze for a moment before asking him in disbelief, “Don’t tell me you came all the way here just to ask me to look after your daughter?”
Steve countered coolly, “What else would it be? Remember this. Don’t play any of your tricks on her. Otherwise, your family won’t be able to bear the consequences.”
It was obvious he had known about Juliet coming to the hospital to see me. Given how close we were, of course, he feared she might abuse her position and make things difficult for Dorothy.
Juliet was so angry that she was rendered momentarily speechless.
Having delivered his warning, Steve turned to leave.
But when he reached the door, he suddenly stopped and turned back.
As if going through the motions, he asked me perfunctorily, “Are you okay? What did the doctor say?”
The doctor’s office was right next to my hospital room. He couldn’t even be bothered to go over and ask about my condition.

It was funny how he had found time in his packed schedule to come all the way here just to tell Juliet not to mistreat his child at the kindergarten.
Even though I had already decided to divorce him, this was still the man I had loved since childhood. I would be lying if I said I didn’t feel hurt.
“I’m fine,” I replied tersely, not wanting to say another word.
Steve nodded, and Jake hurried to open the door for him.
Only after we were sure he had gone far enough away did Hillary speak again. “Now I’ll explain what you need to prepare for this divorce.”
I looked at her and listened intently.
