From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 20

Chapter 20

That evening, I returned to the Griffin villa.

I assumed Steve wouldn’t be back for a few more days, at least until Isabel’s dog recovered.

But when I arrived home, they were already back. The three of them looked like a perfectly happy family of three. They were walking the dog together in the courtyard leisurely.

I couldn’t tell whether Dorothy did it on purpose or not. When she saw me, she suddenly let go of the leash.

The white Labrador barked loudly and charged straight toward me.

I froze in terror. Ever since I was a child, I had been afraid of dogs. I screamed and stumbled backward in panic.

Behind me was the swimming pool. With one misstep, I fell straight in. Water splashed everywhere. It was late autumn, so the pool water was icy.

Although I could swim, I was soaked through by the time I managed to climb out of the pool. The thin fabric of my dress clung to my body. In my disheveled state, I stood before Steve and his lover in utter humiliation.

From the beginning until then, Steve showed no reaction at all. He merely frowned slightly as he looked at me.

Dorothy clapped her hands excitedly and laughed. “Haha! A drowned rat! Look at the drowned rat!”

Seeing that I had been mocked enough, Isabel finally gave Dorothy a mild, perfunctory rebuke.

“Dorothy,” she warned without any real reproach in her tone.

Only then did Dorothy stop, but the smug look on her face never faded.

As I stared at the horrid little girl, I had a wild urge to shove her into the pool just to let her have a taste of her own medicine. However, I couldn’t bring myself to hurt a child.

Isabel walked up to me with her signature fake, apologetic smile. “I’m so sorry, Ms. Yaxley. Dorothy loves playing pranks. It’s in her nature. Please don’t-”

Before she could finish, I suddenly grabbed her arm and flung her straight into the pool.

“Ah!” Isabel screamed. She thrashed wildly in the water and shouted, “Steve, save me! Help! I’m drowning!”

Chapter 20

Dorothy shot me a furious glare and urged Steve anxiously, “Daddy, hurry and save Mommy! She’s going to drown!”

Just moments ago, Steve had watched stoically as I fell into the water and scrambled to get out. Now, he handed his rosary beads to Dorothy and jumped straight into the pool to rescue

Isabel.

I stood there quietly, watching him save the damsel in distress.

A thousand tiny needles pierced my heart.

When he carried Isabel out of the water, he was completely drenched. He was a man who always cared a lot about his appearance. However, he didn’t seem to mind at all at the moment.

Isabel lay weakly in his arms, like she was clinging to dear life.
