From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24

To think Steve would actually say something like that.

I clenched my fists. Even though my voice was trembling with

clearly.

anger,

I enunciated every word

“If I were you, I’d reflect on whether I spoiled my child into becoming incompetent. If you want her to be a princess, then don’t send her to kindergarten. Society won’t just coddle her

and bend over backward for her.”

I was already exhausted after working overtime so late. After taking a shower, all I wanted was to go to bed early.

But that night, sleep eluded me once again.

In the early hours of the morning, I logged into the backend of a novel website and continued updating my story.

I’d originally been writing it just for myself. Unexpectedly, there were actually some readers urging me to update more frequently.

The next day, when I arrived at the office, Claire uncharacteristically said something decent,” I read the article you emailed me yesterday. It’s not bad.”

With a half-smile, she added, “I didn’t expect you to still have some real skills. You haven’t let your professional training go to waste all these years.”

I smiled faintly. “You flatter me.”

I thought that since Claire couldn’t find fault with me, she’d back off and I’d finally be able to work in peace.

But just before the end of the workday, she suddenly walked over to my desk and said, “Do me a favor and go pick up a friend for me.”

I frowned. “Is this work-related? If not, then you should go pick up your own friend.”

With that, I grabbed my bag and got ready to clock out.

She stopped me and added, “I could’ve gone myself, but the news department has a client dinner tonight that I need to attend.”

I was still unwilling to go and tried to brush it off. “Can’t you just help your friend call a taxi?”

Claire said solemnly, “Her identity is sensitive. She can’t be picked up by someone unfamiliar. Zara, I’m asking you because I trust you. If you don’t want to go, then you can go entertain the client for me, and I’ll go pick her up myself.”

I had always been terrible at socializing, and on top of that, she had the authority to decide whether I passed my probation.

In the end, I caved and agreed.

Before I left, she gave me a string of numbers and asked me to send her my license plate number so she could forward it to that friend.

And just like that, as soon as I got off work, I headed toward a scenic area in Hevark.

By the time I reached the entrance, the place was packed tight, as if some big shot were inside.

Before I could even process what was happening, the car door was suddenly opened. Several bodyguards escorted two people over and ushered them inside.

“Mr. Griffin, Ms. Stone, this is the car.”

After checking the license plate, the bodyguards confirmed that I was the one sent to pick them up.
