Chapter 26
When the fans saw that I was the only one in the car, and that Isabel wasn’t there at all, they completely lost it.
“Isabel isn’t in the car! How is that possible?”
“Who is this woman?”
“Come out right now!”
In a matter of seconds, they dragged me out of the car. Shards of broken glass cut into my
hand.
However, that was far from the end. They grabbed me and shouted questions at me all at once.
“Where’s Isabel? Where did Izzy go?”
“Do you have any idea how hard it was for us to find her? How dare you mislead us!”
“Damn it! We’ve supported Isabel for so long just to take one photo! Why wouldn’t you even give us that chance?”
I became their punching bag to vent their frustrations.
They yanked my hair, tore at my clothes, and screamed like maniacs.
There were too many of them. I couldn’t break free at all.
I didn’t know when it happened, but amid the chaos, the sound of police sirens suddenly cut through the noise, abruptly ending what was essentially a mob assault.
Those crazed fans were taken away by the police. I was brought to the police station as well to give a statement.
After I explained what had happened, the officers were sympathetic.
They had a doctor in the station help me with some basic treatment and asked gently, “Do you need us to call a family member to pick you up?”
“Thanks, but I’ll go back on my own.”
My voice was hoarse, so exhausted that I could barely speak.
Later, a female officer offered to drive me home. She probably felt sorry for me and noticed that my car had been taken in for repairs.

On the way, she reminded me, “Ms. Yaxley, make sure you apply the ointment the doctor prescribed every day. That way it won’t leave scars on your face.”
“Okay. I understand. Thank you.”
The only warmth I felt that night came from a complete stranger.
Half an hour later, I finally arrived home. It was just in time for dinner at the villa.
The crystal chandelier bathed the dining room in a soft, cozy glow. Dorothy ran back and forth
between Steve and Isabel’s arms.
Steve said indulgently, “Slow down. Be careful, and don’t trip.”
Isabel cut a piece of steak and fed it to Dorothy. “Come, darling. Take a bite.”
Only when I appeared before them in such a wretched state did Steve’s dark pupils shrink. It was as if he had only just realized that I still existed, the person he had completely forgotten.
Their happiness stabbed at my eyes. The chill spreading through my chest at the moment was even sharper than the biting chill of the fall air outside.
Steve frowned and asked, “How did you
end up
like this?”
