From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 31

Chapter 31

That evening, I met up with Juliet and told her everything.

She was just as confused as I was.

Then, she said, “Isn’t that easy? I’ll hire a private investigator to look into it. If Steve really has psychological issues, then the divorce will be even simpler. Someone with a mental condition proposed to you and married you while deliberately hiding his illness is considered marriage fraud.”

I gave her a deadpan look. “Don’t forget, I have psychological issues too. I’m seeing a psychiatrist as well.”

Juliet snapped, “How is that the same? He was the one who drove you to this state. Anyway, just leave this to me!”

She continued through gritted teeth, “That damned Steve has been making things difficult for our kindergarten lately because of his daughter. He even threatened my dad, saying he’d withdraw the Griffin Group’s annual investment in us.

“I’ve been itching to get dirt on him. Let’s see if he still dares to act so arrogantly once I catch him by the tail!”

I went home right after dinner with Juliet. By the time I reached home, Steve had yet to return.

I heard Isabel talking to him on the phone in the living room, gently reminding him, “Don’t rush yourself. No matter how bad things get, remember to eat.

I didn’t know what was said on the other end, but Isabel smiled sweetly and said, “Alright. I’ll put Dorothy to bed first and won’t wait for you.”

It felt oddly refreshing.

In the past, Steve often traveled for work and stayed out overnight. But ever since Dorothy and Isabel moved in, he hadn’t stayed out a single night.

So the fact that he wasn’t coming home tonight… Did it have something to do with his visit to the psychiatrist earlier in the afternoon?

It wasn’t until I returned to my room and checked my phone that I learned the real reason

Steve hadn’t come home.

There had been an incident at one of the Griffin Group’s construction sites.

The contractor had absconded with several million dollars, and the workers hadn’t been paid for half a year.

Today, one worker-desperate after failing to get his wages-acted impulsively and jumped to his death from the top of the construction site. Only then did the issue get exposed to public scrutiny, triggering a massive social backlash.

All the blame was being directed squarely at Griffin Group.

It was no wonder Isabel had spoken the way she did earlier.

The situation was really bad.

For a full six months, Steve, as the CEO, hadn’t noticed anything wrong at the site.

It seemed all his energy had been spent indulging in romance with Isabel.

The next day, Claire assigned me a task as soon as I got to work.

She sent me to interview Griffin Group about the construction worker’s incident.

“Hurry up and go. We need firsthand information as soon as possible. Remember, you must get the CEO of Griffin Group to speak.”

She rattled off the assignment in a rush, then hurried off to a meeting.

I didn’t even have time to refuse.

I had to get Steve to speak? With so many people attacking the Griffin Group right now, I’d be lucky not to get shut down on the spot. There was no way he’d accept an interview from me!

However, I had a deadline to work with, too.

With no other choice, I shouldered my equipment, set up my interview gear, and headed to Griffin Group.

The moment I entered, I was stopped by the front desk.

“Are you a reporter? I’m sorry, but Mr. Griffin isn’t seeing anyone right now and isn’t accepting any interviews.”

As she spoke, I glanced outside and saw that there was already a crowd of reporters just like

Just then, Jake walked in from outside.

I immediately called out to him, “Jake!”

“Mrs-” He caught himself, remembering that my marriage to Steve was a secret, then quickly corrected himself. “Ms. Yaxley, what brings you here?”

I answered bluntly, “I’m here for an interview.”

Jake looked troubled. “Please, have mercy on Mr. Griffin. I just finished dealing with a swarm of reporters outside. He really can’t accept any interviews right now. Can you please not put me in a difficult situation?”

On the way over, a colleague had sent me information about the victim’s family.

They were destitute.

The man had been doing manual labor at the construction site for a full six months just for a monthly salary of 800 dollars. Even then, the contractor had delayed payment for half a year, and not a single cent had been paid.

The family had literally run out of money to put food on the table. Their child couldn’t afford school. Left with no other options, the worker had been forced into that desperate choice- ending his life at just 40 years old.

And Steve? The vegetables he ate were airlifted fresh from overseas the same day. The clothes he bought for his mistress were top-tier international luxury brands. Even his daughter’s kindergarten life required two personal maids to serve her.

Now that something like this had happened, he hid himself away.

How was that fair?

I said coldly, “Do you really want me to spell out the relationship between Steve, Isabel, and me right here? That way, Mr. Griffin won’t just make social news-he’ll make entertainment headlines, too. Jake, think it through.”
