From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 34

Chapter 34

Isabel’s crying reached my ears. “Steve, my chest hurts so much… It feels like my myocarditis is flaring up again!”

“Did that spook you just now? I’ll take you to the hospital right away,” Steve said.

From beginning to end, Steve’s gaze never once landed on my shoes, which were already soaked through with blood. He scooped Isabel up in his arms and hurried toward the car.

Only then did I slowly turn my head, watching as his steps grew faster and faster, the hem of his black coat whipping in the wind.

And then, his car disappeared from my sight.

The searing pain in my toes forced me to collapse onto the ground. My heart hammered wildly against my chest, cold sweat breaking out all over my body.

If that stone had fallen just a little closer, I might not even be alive

Yet for the entire time, Steve never noticed that I was injured.

At that moment, a fine drizzle began to fall.

anymore.

Work at the construction site stopped. Everyone ran indoors to take shelter from the rain. Soon, the vast site was left completely empty.

I sat there in the rain, fumbling for my phone to call the ambulance.

But just as luck would have it, my phone was dead. Even the heavens seemed determined to make things difficult for me.

The rain grew heavier. I was so cold my teeth chattered as I hugged myself tightly.

The blood at my toes was washed into a diluted red stream, winding along the sole of my

shoes.

I was already anemic to begin with. Now I felt dizzy, my vision spinning, and my consciousness started to slip.

Just as despair was about to swallow me, a blinding pair of headlights cut through the curtain

of rain.

A black Bentley stopped beside me.

A young man got out, holding an umbrella. He walked over and asked, “Miss, do you need

help?”

I froze for a moment. As if grasping a lifeline, I quickly said, “Yes! Could you take me to the hospital?”

He held the umbrella with one hand and steadied me with the other. “Can you stand up on your own?”

I tried for a long time but couldn’t even take a single step. Choking up, I said, “I’m sorry… my foot is injured.”

“Wait here for a moment.”

He went back to the car, opened the door again, and said respectfully to the person inside, ” Mr. Zeller, this lady hurt her foot. I can’t really support her properly while holding the umbrella. Could you… trouble yourself to come down and hold the umbrella for a bit while I help her into the car?”

As he spoke, his voice grew weaker and weaker, as if he feared he’d offended the man.

It seemed the person inside was someone of very high status.

Not long after, the man in the car stepped out.

Through the rain, I vaguely made out his sharp, striking features and his cold, austere brows.

He didn’t take the umbrella from his assistant. Instead, he walked straight over to me, lifted me effortlessly in his arms, and placed me into the car.

The assistant hurriedly held the umbrella over his head, afraid he’d get wet.

Even so, my clothes were soaked through, and I still ended up dirtying his coat.

I sat stiffly against the car door, afraid of dirtying the seat further.
