Chapter 35
The assistant was taken aback. “The contract is about to be signed soon. If we stop now, they’ll definitely demand an explanation.”
“A worker just died last night, and now even a crane on their site has had a safety failure. Do you think they’ll still have the nerve to demand anything?” the man known as Mr. Zeller said.
As he spoke, his tone carried an unmistakable pressure that brooked no argument. “Just do as
I said.”
We arrived at the hospital, and the rain stopped.
Before getting out of the car, I said to him, “Thank you so much for today. If it’s convenient, could you leave me a business card? I’d like to thank you properly in person sometime.”
“There’s no need. It was nothing,” he replied calmly, giving a restrained nod before having his assistant escort me inside.
Only then did I realize how abrupt my request must have sounded.
A man like him, clearly someone of great status, would probably think that asking for his card meant I might try to latch onto him later.
I tactfully said goodbye and was helped out of the car by his assistant.
Luckily, the hospital rented out wheelchairs. He got one for me and helped me sit down.
Even though the man in the car was his boss, it was this assistant who handled everything for me from start to finish.
I asked, “Since your boss doesn’t want to reveal his name, would you mind telling me yours?” “Oh, me? I’m Luca Grant. But really, you don’t need to think too much about it. Mr. Zeller was the one who noticed you sitting in the rain and told me to check on you. If you want to thank someone, thank him. I’m just the errand boy.”
Luca chatted casually as he pushed my wheelchair along.
I said awkwardly, “But he doesn’t seem willing to share any information. I don’t even have a chance to thank him.”
Luca laughed. “That’s just how Mr. Zeller is. Don’t take it personally. Too many people have their eyes on him. He’s afraid of trouble.”

The implication was obvious. He was wary that I might use gratitude as an excuse to cling to him, making it hard to shake me off later.
I stopped asking about his boss to avoid
any misunderstanding.
Luca wheeled me all the way to the emergency department. I explained to the doctor how I’d been injured.
The doctor frowned deeply. “Your toe is already fractured. You need surgery immediately. A family member needs to pay the fees right away. If this is delayed any longer, the toe could become ischemic and necrotic. We’ll have to amputate if that happens.”
Luca immediately said, “I’ll go pay. Please take care of her.”
Just then, from behind the blue curtain in the emergency department, a familiar voice rang
out.
It was Isabel. “Where on earth is the doctor? We’ve been here for so long. Why hasn’t anyone
come to see me yet?”
I hadn’t expected them to come to this hospital as well.
A nurse replied patiently, “I’m sorry, Ms. Stone. There are many patients today, and the doctors are prioritizing critical cases.”
Isabel retorted unhappily, “What do you mean by that? My myocarditis has flared up. My chest hurts terribly. Am I not considered a critical patient?”
“Ms. Stone, your ECG shows no abnormalities, and your cardiac ultrasound is also normal,” the nurse explained tirelessly. She was just short of telling Isabel that she was fine and wasting public medical resources.
Isabel looked as if she’d suffered a great injustice and accused them loudly, “Do you think I’m a pushover just because I’m a public figure and have to maintain my image? I’m a patient too! I have the right to file a complaint against your doctors for negligence!”
Left with no choice, the nurse went to look for a doctor.
The nurse called out, “Dr. Palmer, why don’t you check on Ms. Stone first? If she files a complaint, it’ll be trouble for us.’
Dr. Palmer said firmly, “No! I must operate on this lady first. Her foot injury can’t be delayed even a minute. Prepare the operating room immediately. If Isabel wants to complain, let her. I’ll take full responsibility for the consequences!”
The doctor made the decision swiftly and was already heading out, instructing the nurse to
