Chapter 39
Steve’s tall build and broad shoulders used to make me steal a few extra glances.
But now, faced with the same person with nothing left but a pretty shell, I felt none of the old infatuation.
I stared at him and said sternly, “Steve, you
should go back.”
“Go where?” He shot me a glance, then casually climbed onto the bed, lying down beside me.
I used all my strength to edge away to the other side.
The moment I thought about how many times this man had slept with Isabel, I felt sick to my stomach. I was so disgusted that I wanted to kick him off the bed.
However, the anesthesia had only just worn off, and my foot was still injured. No matter how
hard I tried to move away, there was nowhere for me to go.
I reminded him, “Your daughter and your lover are waiting for you at home. This place isn’t suitable for you.”
Steve frowned lightly, then let out a soft chuckle. “Do you remember last month, when you wore lace lingerie and ran into the study trying to sleep with me? You weren’t this reserved
back then.”
My mind snapped back to that moment of utter humiliation. I bit my lip in embarrassment, regret flooding me.
To be honest, I wasn’t the kind of woman who was naturally bold and easygoing.
But once-a-month marital intimacy made it almost impossible for me to get pregnant.
For the sake of having another child with him, I’d spent a long time psyching myself up. Then, I put on the black lace lingerie he used to like most and went into the study, straddling his lap in the most embarrassing posture imaginable.
Yet, no matter how I kissed him or enticed him, he remained completely unmoved.
In the end, he pushed me away, tossed his coat over me, and asked with a tightly furrowed brow, “Where did you learn such cheap tricks?”
With that, he didn’t spare me another glance and walked out of the study.
At the time, I didn’t know he already had a lover and a daughter outside. I thought he was simply trying to hold himself back.

But with Isabel, he broke every rule.
I didn’t dare dwell on the memories of that painfully humiliating night any longer.
I forced a smile and met his gaze. “I won’t do something like that ever again, so you can rest assured and leave. There really isn’t any place for you to sleep here.”
A trace of displeasure flickered in Steve’s eyes as he said coldly, “If you weren’t my wife, do you think I’d bother with you at all?”
I stared at him in disbelief. So, he still remembered that I was his wife?
I hadn’t wanted to argue with him as I knew no matter what I said, he wouldn’t care. But his words just now disgusted me to no end, and I couldn’t hold back.
“When I was injured, you didn’t care. When I was in surgery, you didn’t care either. The time when I needed you most has already passed…”
At the mention of this, guilt seemed to have gripped his heart. His tone softened, losing some of its earlier arrogance.
“The situation was too urgent then. There were too many people at the construction site. I really didn’t notice you were hurt. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have left you there.”
