Honestly, I was surprised that Steve would stop Simone for my sake, too.
Unwilling to accept it, Simone questioned, "Steve, why are you stopping me? Do you have any idea how much damage that article she published today has caused to the Griffin Group?"
Steve glanced at me, then said to Simone, "Since Griffin Group was founded, we've weathered every storm imaginable. What impact could a single news article possibly have?"
Simone stared at him in disbelief. "You're still speaking up for her? Steve, you already have Isabel and Dorothy now. You can't keep ruining your future because of this woman anymore. If you do, how can you face Isabel?"
Steve replied calmly, "Let me handle my own affairs. I'll have Jake escort you home."
"No!" Simone's tone hardened as she snapped, "It's bad enough that this bitch isn't worthy of you, but now she even dares to smear the Griffin Group and compete with Isabel out of jealousy! Look at what she wrote—wasn't it clearly targeting Isabel? You need to divorce her right now!"
Steve's voice grew colder, tinged with displeasure. "Mom, it's time for you to go home."
Ever since her divorce, Simone had relied entirely on her son.
So when Steve was unhappy, even she felt a bit intimidated.
She shot me a hateful glare and said, "Don't get smug too soon! Isabel is the daughter-in-law I recognize. You won't be Mrs. Griffin for much longer!"
With that, she picked up her expensive handbag and stormed out.
The ward fell quiet again.
Steve stood by my bed and reached out to touch my right cheek. "Did my mom hit you?"
"Mm." I hummed in acknowledgment.
I then asked, "What? Are you going to stand up for me?"
He didn't answer, but that much was expected. It wasn't like he could turn around and slap his own mother for my sake.
