Steve's indifferent expression hardened to ice as he barked, "Juliet! Get out of my house—now!"
"She came to see me. I asked her to come!"
I wheeled myself over and looked straight at Steve. "You stay here with your lover and daughter, and I asked Juliet to keep me company. What's wrong with that? If you want her to leave, then I'll leave with her!"
Steve clearly felt that his authority was being challenged. His expression darkened, but in the end, he said nothing. He simply turned and led Dorothy and Isabel inside.
Juliet clutched her chest, clearly shaken by the dog.
I quickly apologized to her.
She took a deep breath and pushed my wheelchair as we headed inside.
On the way, she sighed regretfully. "When you said that just now, I really thought Steve would actually let you leave with me. I was even thinking, great, that would've been perfect. I didn't expect that bastard to still want everything, even at this point."
"He won't be able to for much longer." I forced a smile to reassure her, then asked, "Why did you come so early today?"
Only then did Juliet remember the real reason she came and replied, "I wanted to take you out to get some fresh air. We haven't gone shopping together in forever. And next month, Mrs. Zeller Senior is hosting a banquet. I received an invitation. I want you to come help me pick out some jewelry."
"Mrs. Zeller Senior?"
I froze for a moment, then asked, "Which Zeller family?"
Juliet shook her head helplessly, clearly exasperated by my ignorance. "They're one of the four most powerful families in Delmont. They've recently expanded their business into Hevark.
"Mrs. Zeller Senior likes the climate here, so she's settled down. This banquet is basically their way of networking with the Hevark high society."
