"Oh, I was in a rush to sell it off. I forgot," I explained, brushing it off.
Steve said, "Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. I'll buy that necklace back for you."
After that, he fixed his gaze on my face, slowly spelling it out for me. "Keep it safe this time and don't forget again."
I was dazed for a moment. It turned out that tomorrow was our fourth wedding anniversary.
Steve's serious expression made it seem as if he truly cared about the engagement gift, which carried special meaning for our marriage.
But did he really care? If he did, how could he bring himself to hurt me again and again like this?
That necklace had long since lost its meaning to me. Whether it was bought back or not didn't matter anymore.
…
Truth be told, Steve's promises over the past two years had been nothing more than words spoken casually that were quickly forgotten. I hadn't expected him to move fast this time.
That very evening, I received a call from Henry.
"Oh my, I hadn't expected your number to be the same after all these years," he said, laughing. "Don't tell me you're afraid that I couldn't contact you?"
I replied flatly, "You're overthinking it. Why are you calling me?"
Amused, Henry said, "Steve bought that purple sapphire necklace back from me. Want to guess how much he paid?"
I said indifferently, "Not interested."
Henry continued, "One billion dollars! I made him bleed for it. I hadn't expected him not to bargain for it at all."
I might not have been interested, but the sum still caught me off guard. After all, Steve had once bid ten million dollars for it at an auction years ago.
News of Steve paying a staggering price to buy back a top-grade sapphire necklace from his half-brother quickly spread in the social circle.
Even Juliet had heard about it and called me specifically to confirm.
When she learned that it was true, she said, "I honestly don't know what's going on in Steve's head anymore. I can't say that he cares about you when he's got a mistress and an illegitimate daughter.
"But if we say that he doesn't care, why would he willingly pay up to buy back your engagement gift when he knew that Henry was deliberately fleecing him?"
"Maybe it's just his pride," I replied calmly. "With how his mom embarrassed herself at the mall today, he has to find a way to make up for it."
Juliet said, "Either way, the necklace ended up back with you. That just means that it's meant to be. Besides, that sapphire necklace is top-grade, and there's nothing else like it in the world. It's not bad to keep it. He'll probably give it to you tomorrow as an anniversary gift."
I remembered how, for the past two years, Steve had treated our wedding anniversaries as little more than an afterthought.
