From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 61

Juliet drove me back to the Griffin villa soon enough. Fearing that I might be at a disadvantage, she wanted to come in with me.

But I didn't want her to get dragged into this because of me. So I insisted she go home, telling her that I could handle it on my own.

Before leaving, Juliet said, "You have to call me later. If I don't hear from you tonight, I'm coming back to save you."

"Don't worry." I flashed her a smile and watched her drive away.

Maria then wheeled me in.

Simone was sitting on the couch in the living room. As soon as she saw me, she got up and strode straight toward me.

From her posture alone, it was clear she was ready to pour all the humiliation she had suffered earlier onto me.

Steve quickly stepped in to block Simone. "I already told you, just use your words if you have something to say. Don't lay a hand on her."

She snapped, "If I don't teach this bitch a lesson, she'll never learn the rules of the Griffin family!"

Simone was shaking with rage as she pointed at me. "She knew exactly what kind of relationship I have with Catherine, and she still went out of her way to humiliate me in front of her! She actually pawned off the engagement gift you gave her!

"I've never been this humiliated in my life! You're just too soft. In another era, a woman who disgraced her husband's family would've paid a very heavy price."

Simone ranted on, each word raw and emotional. And I eventually grew to understand just how deeply she hated me.

I once tried swallowing my pride again and again, all just to repair my relationship with her.

Now, I was just relieved I hadn't wasted any effort in trying.

A flicker of irritation crossed Steve's eyes when he heard Simone bring up the engagement gift as well. He asked, "Why did you sell it? Explain yourself."

Without feeling the least bit guilty, I replied honestly, "The hospital is demanding payment for my mom's treatment. I didn't have the money."
