From Wife to Aunt: His Worst Nightmare novel Chapter 64

Perplexed, I opened the box. It contained a translucent purple sapphire bracelet, flawless in both color and quality.

Before I could even react, Steve had already taken my hand and slipped the bracelet onto my wrist.

"Not bad, it fits perfectly." He seemed to be pleased with his choice of gift.

Meanwhile, I looked past Steve's tall figure to the clock on the wall.

It was already past midnight. Our anniversary was over.

"Thank you," I faintly replied. "I'm tired. Is there anything else?"

Steve was the same as ever, as if he had simply completed a routine by handing over his gift.

He told me to get some rest and left my room. However, I could no longer sleep.

I only found out online that night that the bracelet on my wrist was something Steve recently bid on at an auction. It was a top-grade purple sapphire bracelet worth over 20 million dollars.

Some jewelry experts had even compared it to the sapphire necklace Steve had bought before. It was actually more valuable than that necklace.

Early the next morning, Isabel was still wearing that necklace when I showed up at the dining table. But the moment she noticed the bracelet on my wrist, a flash of jealousy crossed her eyes.

I had to admire Steve's nerve. Both his wife and his mistress were wearing jewelry he had given them, yet he ate calmly—without the slightest hint of unease.

After breakfast, I got up to head back to my room.

Suddenly, Dorothy said, "Daddy, that bracelet that maid is wearing matches Mommy's necklace so well! They're both purple!"

Steve replied, "Dorothy, I'll buy Mommy an even prettier one next time, okay?"

Dorothy pouted unhappily and said, "But I think the one the maid is wearing looks better! Can't you get her to take it off and let Mommy try it on?"

Isabel had been eyeing my bracelet all through breakfast. I hadn't expected her subtle attempts to steal it to turn into outright snatching—and worse, using a child to do it.

Just as Dorothy reached for it, I loosened my grip and deliberately let it fall to the floor. It hit the ground and split cleanly down one side.

Dorothy stared at me angrily. "You did that on purpose!"

My smile deepened as I said, "It's mine. I can do whatever I want with it. You're still young, so don't learn from your mother. She's always eyeing what belongs to someone else."

Dorothy's eyes grew red in anger. She turned to Steve, wanting him to step in.

I looked at him too. "Don't forget who saved your daughter's life. Don't push things too far. My patience has its limits."

After that, I had Maria wheel me back to my room.

As I left the dining room, I caught the regret in Isabel's eyes. She kept staring at the shattered sapphire bracelet.

I could tell that she really liked things that belonged to other people. After all, it had been worth over 20 million dollars.
