Fortunately, Hillary reacted quickly. She calmly greeted her colleague and joked, "You had better not go tattling to the boss later that I've ditched work to slack off, Holmes. You'd be killing me!"
"Slack off?" Mr. Holmes continued, "I thought you were out meeting a client, too."
Hillary was calm when she explained, "They're my friends. She injured her foot, and since she happened to be near our office today, we decided to meet. Otherwise, we'd never find the time."
Steve's gaze still held a trace of suspicion, but he seemed pressed for time. He told Mr. Holmes, "We've got 30 minutes. We'll make it if we head over now."
Mr. Holmes seemed to defer to him and immediately followed after.
Even after they left, my heart kept pounding, and my palms were slick with cold sweat.
Worried, Juliet asked, "Do you think Steve noticed something? That look he gave us is truly terrifying!"
I took a deep breath and said, "If he did, so be it. The cardiopulmonary support device would go on the market in four days. I have nothing to be afraid of."
After that, we continued discussing the specifics of the divorce with Hillary.
She said that the top priority was still getting another hair sample from Isabel and redoing the DNA test.
Suddenly, Juliet thought of something. "Wait, why is Steve suddenly looking for a lawyer now? Don't tell me he's quietly planning for a divorce just like we are? With how calculating he is, what if he's already strategizing with his lawyer to make Zara leave with nothing?"
Hillary replied, "That's easy. Once I'm back at the firm, I can find out what Nathan has been handling for Mr. Griffin lately. I'll let you know if I hear anything."
After thanking her, Juliet and I returned to the Griffin villa. Steve still wasn't home, and neither Dorothy nor Isabel was around.
We were figuring out how to get a sample of Isabel's hair.
Out of everyone in the villa, the only person I trusted was Maria. However, she was under Steve's employ, so she might not dare to help me with something like this.
Juliet said, "Forget it. What if Maria's already been bought off by Isabel and turns on you instead? How about this? I'll go look for it myself while they're not home."
It seemed Steve had never planned to divorce me—not yet, at least. Otherwise, someone like him would have started laying the groundwork long ago.
…
I thought all I had to do now was patiently wait for the DNA test results.
But that night, after Isabel came home, she suddenly claimed that the birthday gift Steve had given her was now missing.
Steve summoned all the maids in the middle of the night and demanded to know who had entered the master bedroom. A maid responsible for cleaning the master bedroom denied any involvement and insisted she hadn't touched any of Isabel's belongings.
When he called me out, Isabel said firmly, "That's impossible! I left the necklace right on the nightstand. There's no way it would disappear just like that."
I could tell that she hinting at me, so I calmly replied, "You were wearing that necklace around your neck just this morning. You loved it so much, so why would you suddenly take it off and leave it on the nightstand?"
Isabel hesitated slightly, then continued without missing a beat, "It's a valuable necklace given by Steve. I was afraid I'd damage it, so I left it at home. I didn't expect it to be gone when I came back."
