“Lady Margaret, the Federation owes you a debt we’ll never forget!” The officer’s voice had gone hoarse. He was spitting out words like every second counted. “The Aegis escort fleet will arrive at the Valoran Galaxy in one hour. Stand by!”
The channel cut.
Margaret hadn’t even drawn a full breath before her head erupted,
“Host! Have you lost your mind?!” Primo’s shriek made her skull throb. “The front lines? For humans? Those insectoids are nightmare fuel-all slime and green venom and faces that’ll make you puke up your last meal! We’re not going, okay? They eat little kids for breakfast!”
Margaret picked up her water. “Who’s the one who kept going on about exploring new galaxies to rack up points and unlock higher system tiers? Well, here you go. New map, just for you.”
“We can pick a safe map!” Primo sounded on the verge of tears. “Thirteen galaxies in the system, only three are at war! We still have eight perfectly scenic ones left! You want to throw yourself into the Sirius Galaxy meat grinder? What good are points if you’re dead?!”
“Fortune favors the bold.” Margaret dropped the line and tuned Primo out.
She looked up and walked straight into two deeply disapproving stares.
Timothy shot around the table and clamped both hands onto her arms. “My Lady! Let that reckless idiot die! That hellhole is no place for you. Don’t go!”
Cheiron stayed seated. His gray eyes turned cold.
“This is not a game.” His voice was tight, low. “Forget the battlefield conditions for a moment. The fact that Baar’s own top field medics have thrown up their hands means his spiritual power contamination has hit critical mass. You could be torn apart by his frenzied energy before you even get close.”
He paused, then drove the point home. “You performed a deep purification on him not long ago. For him to be contaminated to this degree again, this fast-that tells you how brutal the fighting has become.”
Margaret pulled out a napkin and wiped her hands. Her mind was racing. She could hardly come out and tell them the truth-that she was chasing glory and leverage.
“Central Brain matched us together. That makes us family.” She looked at the two stone-faced males in front of her and let her voice soften. “And family doesn’t sit back and watch each other die. We help each other out.”
The word “family” took the wind right out of Timothy’s sails. Half his bluster went out. He pursed his lips and muttered, “Who’s family with that black snake… I’m only family with you.”
Cheiron rose and straightened his cuffs. “If you insist on going, I’ll accompany you. With me there, I can minimize the risks.”
That set Timothy off again. He gave Margaret’s hands a shake. “Then I’m going too! The Hurst Group has the most advanced private armed fleet in the galaxy. I’ll throw money at three top-tier Starfield Free Mercenaries Guild crews to clear your path. Who’s stopping me?”

Margaret’s headache only sharpened.
Like the front lines aren’t chaotic enough.
“Neither of you is going.” Her tone left no room for argument.
Timothy blinked, wounded. “Why not?”

Margaret sighed and started counting off on her fingers. “One-the Federal Military will never allow non- military personnel into a top-level combat zone. Two-you’re the heir to the Hurst Group. He’s an Academy of Sciences fellow. Both of you swanning onto a Federation front line? What exactly do you think the Federal Military will make of that? Espionage? War profiteering?”
Cheiron said nothing. In his urgency, he’d let those considerations slip.
Political prudence was an unbreakable barrier. The Empire and the Federation shook hands in public, yet behind closed doors, their surveillance and suspicion never ceased.
