“The front lines are a dump. You can’t even get a hot meal out there!” Timothy was still going. “Pack up the head chef from the Hurst Group’s best hotel-right now-along with a full kitchen setup. Get it all on the escort shipl

“And a climate-controlled combat suit! Top spec! And throw in a portable holo-projector so you don’t get bored on the way!

“Premium nutrient solutions, long-shelf-life natural foods that actually taste good-stuff it all in!”

Margaret walked over, a deep frown furrowing her brow. “I’m going to a warzone to save someone. Not to the Sirius Galaxy for a vacation. Also, did you even ask the chef if he’s okay with this?”

Timothy ignored her completely, still swiping at his screen. “I don’t care. I won’t let you feel even the slightest discomfort out there. If he says no, I’ll triple his pay. If that still won’t work? Ten times.”

Cheiron, by comparison, was far more practical.

He pulled a compact white temperature-controlled case from his medical kit and handed it to Margaret.

“This contains a high-concentration spiritual power stabilizer, along with basic emergency medications.” He opened the case and pointed to a red syringe, his tone turning deadly serious. “If Baar has already lost all reason by the time you reach him, inject this directly into his carotid artery. For a standard male, it forces twelve hours of induced sleep. Even for an SSS-class, it’ll suppress the frenzy for three.”

He closed the case and looked Margaret in the eye. “Remember. Your safety comes first. If he’s too far gone, abandon him and get yourself out.”

The words were cold enough to cut, but to Margaret, they landed exactly right.

She took the case and smiled, “Got it.”

A low roar rumbled in from outside, vibrating faintly through the floorboards.

The ship had arrived.

Timothy followed Margaret down, his face set in a reluctant scowl. He carried the white medical case in one hand, plus the oversized supply bag he’d forcibly foisted on her.

Thankfully, the head chef had narrowly escaped being press-ganged into coming. Before Margaret left, the man had looked at her like she’d personally saved his life.

In the end, the bag only held premium nutrient solutions, portable food packs, and the climate-controlled suit.

A compact jump-ship sat on the landing pad not far from the hotel-matte-black hull, heavy armor plating, the Federal Military’s twin-sword insignia painted on its side.

The military hadn’t had time to evacuate the area. A crowd had gathered behind the cordon, a dense wall of camera flashes popping.

An officer in uniform strode down the ramp, stopped three paces from Margaret, and snapped off a crisp

salute.

“Lady Margaret, Aegis Escort Fleet, First Division. Orders to escort you to the Sirius Galaxy!”

He took the luggage from Timothy’s hands with a deference that bordered on ceremonial.

Margaret set her foot on the metal ramp and walked up, one step at a time, into the ship.

The hatch sealed slowly behind her, shutting out the noise and light of the Valoran Galaxy.

On the ground, the two top-tier males stood side by side, watching the ship rise.

Cheiron was the first to look away. He turned and walked back inside.

Timothy stayed where he was, the wind tearing through his golden hair. He stared at the spot where the ship had vanished, his blue eyes churning with unspoken emotion.

All he wanted was for his wife to come back safe.

If the Federation couldn’t protect her, he swore he’d bring the Hurst Group’s fleet down on Baar and every insectoid in the Sirius Galaxy and carve them all into pieces.

The ship’s interior was all hard edges-silver-gray alloy, brutally functional. Heavy-armored officers lined both sides, spines rigid. They looked at Margaret the way pilgrims look at a saint.

Near the window, they had arranged a wide leather armchair with a thick white fur throw draped over it.

Margaret thanked them and sat down. She turned her head to the viewport, watching the star trails stretch and blur past the glass. She didn’t speak.

Her back was straight. Her hands, folded in her lap, were clenched tight.

She was still an ordinary person at heart. Across three lifetimes, she’d fought no more than a handful of skirmishes, let alone set foot in a warzone. Now she was diving headfirst into the galaxy’s most brutal front. Saying she wasn’t afraid would be a lie. Fear was only human.

The cabin was deathly quiet. The officers traded glances. They could all see that their precious SSS-class lady was nervous. No one dared say a word.

If they said the wrong thing and spooked her if she demanded they turn around and head back to Prime Planet-the commander on the front lines was as good as dead.

“Don’t be afraid.” Primo’s voice surfaced in her mind, softer than usual. “Wherever we go, I’m with you.”
