Kiran’s face finally went cold.

“Doesn’t qualify” stung worse than being exposed. It wasn’t a jab at his pride-it was a cold, unbridgeable fact of rank.
But he recovered fast. He nodded. “Fine. Get some rest. I’ll check on you another time.”
He turned and walked away, his stride steady, his back straight.
Margaret watched him disappear around the corner, then shut the door.
“Host, you’re just letting him go?” Primo sounded baffled. “He was clearly fishing for intel on Baar. You gave him nothing. What if he gets desperate?”
“He won’t.” Margaret flopped onto the bed. “The more annoyed I act, the less he can read. He can’t get a fix on anything.
“On top of that. I poked him with the SSS-class thing. His ego can’t handle being locked out of the inner circle. If he wants to climb, Baar has to die. And right now, Baar’s condition is a black box. He has no idea if his dose did the job.”
She closed her eyes, mapping out her next moves.
“He’s 100 smart not to see through you,” Primo said, still worried.
“Probably,” Margaret laughed.
“Then what?!”
“Primo, I heard a story once.” Her voice went slow and easy in her head. “There was a way people used to trap monkeys. They’d carve a small hole in a tree and drop some sweet fruit inside. The monkey would reach in and grab it. But once its fist closed around the fruit, it couldn’t pull its hand back out. All it had to do was let go. But it never would. It wanted the fruit too badly. So it just sat there, holding on, until the hunter walked up and took it.”
She opened her eyes and stared at the cold ceiling light.
“Kiran is the monkey. He wants Baar dead so badly. If he loses this opening, he’ll never get another clean shot. And the moment Baar ‘wakes up’ and starts digging, his time runs out. So even if he smells the trap— his ambition won’t let him loosen his grip. He can’t let go of the fruit.”
She rolled over and pulled the blanket over her head.
I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. Right now, I need sleep. Let my scheming ex-husband stew in his own paranoia.
Kiran walked away, his stride unhurried. Around the bend in the corridor, two patrolling soldiers stopped and saluted. He gave a curt nod, his composure intact.
Only when he scanned his way into his room and the metal door locked behind him did the mask finally crack.

The room was dark. Kiran stood in the blackness. He yanked open his collar and threw his jacket over the chair.
Something’s off. All of it.
He replayed every frame of the day in his head.
It started with Gary’s little speech in the crowd. “Commander Iverson’s condition is stable. The purification’s about halfway done. Zone Al is off-limits. Stay clear.”
Too much information packed into a single update. On the surface, it sounded reassuring. But announcing “halfway done” so publicly-and locking out everyone below S-class from Zone A1-that was a flare sent up into the dark
