The corridor fell silent. Behind his glasses, Kiran’s gaze sharpened, his mind already drifting elsewhere.

In Margaret’s head, Primo launched into a recap of the original plot.

“In the book, Major General Noah is ruthless. The drug he gave Baar didn’t just trigger the frenzy-it tore through his spiritual realm walls. The brass ended up hauling Baar into space with mechs and letting him detonate just to save the base. With Baar dead, no one was in charge. That’s when the insectoids launched a full-scale assault.”

Primo paused, its tone going grim. “The timing was too perfect. Like someone fed them intel. Kiran stepped into the chaos with a reckless bait-and-trap plan. He sacrificed a third of the front-line troops and wiped out the insectoid main force.”

Margaret let out a cold laugh in her head. He climbed his way to the top over the bodies of his own men. Classic Kiran.

“That win sent his reputation soaring. He got promoted to general. But it didn’t end there,” Primo kept going. “Gary, the commander at the time, never got over Baar’s death. He was digging into the mole when he died-suddenly, in a ship explosion. With Gary gone, Kiran’s path was clear. He took command. First S- class in history to lead the Federal Military.”

Margaret clicked her tongue.

A patient predator. Baar and Gary-nothing but rungs on his ladder.

In the corridor, Kiran surfaced from his brief lapse.

He adjusted his glasses. The look behind the lenses warmed, softened into something almost tender.

“Margaret. Believe me or not-“He paused, choosing his words. “I really did love you once.”

“Then why did you divorce me?” Margaret leaned against the doorframe, her voice flat.

Kiran sighed, bitterness pooling in his eyes. “Your spiritual power. You were C-class. I’m S-class. If we’d stayed bonded, my spiritual power would’ve slowly destroyed your spiritual realm. Over time, you would’ve died.”

He looked straight at her, his words thick with feeling, “I couldn’t keep you by my side and watch that happen. So I pushed you away, Made you hate me. The cleanest break possible. It was the only way you’d

survive.”

A perfectly crafted story. He’d taken a man who threw away his wife and turned him into a tragic hero who sacrificed his own heart to save her.

The old Margaret would’ve been sobbing into his chest by now.

When she didn’t speak, Kiran took it as a sign. He pressed on, “I know what you’re thinking. That I’m a hypocrite. That I only came back because you’re SSS-class now. That I’m after your rank, your power.”

The air in the corridor hung still.

Margaret looked at his earnest, heartfelt face and laughed, “Isn’t that exactly what this is?”

Kiran froze. “What?”

She drove her gaze straight into his. “I said,

The deep sincerity on Kiran’s face ou’re only here because I’m SSS-class”

cracked.

He’d prepared for wears. For hesitation. Even for anger. He hadn’t prepared for mockery-for her to rip his mask clean off without a flicker of emotion.

But he was Kiran. His composure held.

Two beats, and he steadied himself.
