The top-priority alarm on Gary’s Holo-bracelet shrieked through the quiet of the command room. Red light pulsed, bright enough to sear the eyes.

Gary looked up, his hair a mess.

The warning on his screen blared in bold. “Serial Explosions at K9 Mining Outpost. Main comm lines severed.”

This was a trap, plain as day.

Gary dragged a hand through his hair and scrolled through the data, A standard equipment failure wouldn’t require his attention.

But K9 was the energy artery of the main base. If it went down, the visual cloaking barrier would vanish, and the entire base would lose power. Every last system.

Every last one of the hundred-thousand-plus personnel would die right alongside Baar. He had to lead a team out there, assess the situation, and if things went south, start an evacuation immediately.

He knew it was a trap. He was walking into it anyway.

In the commander’s quarters in Zone C, Margaret sat cross-legged on the bed, scrolling through Starnet while working her way through the portable food Timothy had packed.

The news about Phoebe’s arrest was still burning up the charts. The comments section was a slaughterhouse. She was just tapping on a poll titled “How Many Years Should Phoebe Get?” when a knock hit the door.

Gary stood outside in full combat gear. None of his usual joking around. He stepped in and locked the door behind him.

“I have to leave the base.” He got straight to the point. “K9 Mining Outpost just got hit.”

“Kiran?” Margaret set down the food packet and straightened up.

“Almost certainly.” Gary let out a cold snort. “Nobody else would stir up this much chaos right now.”

Margaret leaned against the table, her mind spinning. In her head, Primo was already going off. “Host, this means Kiran is making his move! If Gary leaves, Baar will be completely exposed! If he goes after Baar now-”

“Based on the current situation, Kiran’s most likely window is two to six hours after Gary’s departure.” Primo paused. “Host, should you tell Gary to leave more men behind?”

Margaret didn’t answer it. She looked at Gary. “Kiran wants Baar’s command. He’s not going to lead the insectoids straight to the main base, Destroying this place would leave him with nothing to rule.”

“You’re right,” Gary sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “But I can’t gamble with the whole base on that. What if he loses control? What if the insectoids actually push through in the chaos? I have to confirm the situation on the ground. Worst case, I initiate a full evacuation.”

He unhooked a compact particle pistol from his tactical belt and handed it to her.

“Keep this on you.” His voice was firm. “Stay in this room today. Don’t go anywhere. I’ve locked down Commander Iverson’s quarters. No one can get in without my biometrics or his. There’s heavy security outside. As long as you stay put, Kiran can’t touch you.”

He stopped. His mouth opened, then closed, like he wanted to say something else. In the end, he just exhaled and swallowed the words.

Margaret caught the look on his face and narrowed her eyes. “Say it.”

“Take care of yourself.” He dropped his gaze, his voice rougher now. “And Commander Iverson-I haven’t checked on him today. I don’t know his current condition. Don’t go there yourself.”

Margaret looked down at the particle pistol in her hand, tested its weight, and slipped it into her pocket.

“Bring more men. In case there’s an ambush.”

Gary nodded. He turned and strode out, his footsteps fading down the corridor. He took nearly half the base’s elite mobile forces with him. Left behind was the Aegis unit, stationed close to her quarters.

The door closed. The room fell silent. Margaret stayed where she was.

Kiran’s target is Baar. Gary locked down that isolation room like a vault. In theory, airtight.
