The guard hesitated. Everyone on the base knew Baar’s condition-a ticking bomb. Nobody in their right mind would wander in there just to poke the hornet’s nest.
Besides, even if he let Kiran through, the core isolation room was sealed behind another encrypted, top- clearance door. No key, no entry.
Making things hard for him would only bring them trouble.
“Sir. Go ahead.” The guard lowered his rifle and stepped aside.
Kiran gave a slight nod and walked through.
Past the first blast door, the lights dimmed. Kiran stopped in front of the thick titanium security door. The final line of defense-the one Gary had personally locked down before leaving.
A black decoder chip slipped into his palm. The thing had cost a fortune, enough to buy a midsize starship on the black market. Designed specifically to crack military intranet firewalls. He’d prepped it long before Baar’s collapse, waiting for exactly this moment.
He pressed the chip against the scanner. A faint blue glow flickered. A low electric hum filled the air.
In less than ten seconds, the heavy door clicked and slid open.
Kiran slipped inside.
Cold air hit him. He didn’t rush forward. He stayed out of the camera’s range, moving to the corner control panel instead. He drew his combat knife, pried open the casing, and sliced the wiring clean.
Surveillance was down.
Only then did he straighten up, smooth his cuffs, and walk toward the blast-proof glass at the center of the
room.
Cold white light fell on the medical bed. Baar lay flat. The massive black serpent coiled beside him, motionless-exactly as it had appeared on the monitor.
Kiran stepped closer, studying his prey through the glass.
Too quiet. Something’s wrong!
He took half a step back and pulled a compact high-beam flashlight from his pocket. He aimed it straight through the glass and clicked it on,
The beam cut through and hit the figure on the bed. It passed right through, projecting a bright spot on the wall behind.
A hologram! There’s no one on that bed. I’ve been played!
A high, sharp ring started in his ears. He forced it down, forced himself to calm down.
The air was still thick with pressure-the crushing weight of a high-ranking male’s spiritual power. Even

The pressure was real. Gary had taken his forces and left. Only one person on this base could emit that kind of spiritual power.
Baar hadn’t gone anywhere. He was here.
And his condition couldn’t be good. Otherwise, he wouldn’t need a hologram to hide behind. He’d have come out and snapped Kiran’s bones already.
Kiran swept his gaze over the empty chamber. If Baar hadn’t fled, he was tucked into some hidden corner.
He circled around the glass wall. Behind it, where two walls met at a blind angle, he found an unmarked passage. He stepped inside. A dozen paces in, he hit a dead end a solid metal wall.
Kiran didn’t turn back. He pressed his palm flat against the surface and felt along the seam. There-a hidden panel. He pushed. The wall sank inward without a sound, revealing a narrow, concealed elevator door.
Found it.
Kiran exhaled. Then his eyes landed on the control panel. No buttons. Just a palm scanner glowing faint blue.
A mechanical voice rang out. “Biometric verification required.”
