Kiran’s voice was soft and carefully measured.

Margaret tossed her empty can into the disposal slot beside the elevator with a clean shot and dusted off her hands.

“Move.” She lifted her leg to step past him.

Kiran clenched his jaw and lunged, locking both arms around her calf. The grip was brutal-every last bit of strength he had.

“You can’t go in there! You’ll die!”

“Let go.” Margaret pulled, but he held fast.

The pressure had him half-crushed against the floor, but S-class bone and muscle counted for something. His arms stayed locked like a vice.

“Margaret, open your eyes! He’s a monster now! I’m the only one who can protect you!” His glasses had been knocked off somewhere during the crawl. His eyes were bare and blazing with desperate possession.

Margaret ran out of patience.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out the compact particle pistol Gary had pressed into her hand before leaving.

The muzzle met Kiran’s forehead.

The heat of the barrel bled through his skin, and Kiran’s voice died in his throat.

He finally saw what lay in her eyes-the flat, empty stare reserved only for something already dead. Fear coiled tight around his heart.

“Margaret… you can’t kill me.” The words tumbled out, grasping at anything. “We were married. You loved me. You said you’d stay with me forever. Don’t you remember?”

He dredged up every scrap of their past, hurling it at her, trying to reach whatever was left of the old Margaret.

Her hand stopped.

In the three dark years of the original Margaret’s life, Kiran had been the most normal of her three husbands.

He hadn’t berated her or screamed at her like the other two. He’d simply watched from a distance, and on the rare days his mood allowed, he’d tossed her crumbs of kindness.

For a woman drowning in despair, those small crumbs were all the light she had.

In the original Margaret’s mind, Kiran was the only one who had never truly hurt her. The only one who might have become a real husband.

The emotion surged up without warning. Margaret felt her eyes burn, her nose sting, her fingers lock rigid around the trigger.

The original owner’s lingering obsession had surfaced at the worst possible moment, trying to seize control. It urged her to lower the gun and spare the man who’d once given her scraps of warmth.

Margaret recoiled from the feeling with disgust. Mistaking scraps of kindness for love, calling cold neglect tenderness. It was pathetic,

Kiran caught her hesitation. He saw the crack and pressed harder,

“Margaret, I knew you couldn’t do it. There’s still something between us, isn’t there? You always listened to me before. Just put the gun down. We’ll start over. I swear, I’ll never let you suffer again…”

He kept talking, his voice brimming with the wild joy of having survived.

Behind the glass wall, Baar fought through the searing pain in his head and clung to a single thread of clarity. His golden eyes snapped open, locking onto the scene by the elevator doors.

That piece of filth is touching her!

Murderous rage nearly swallowed him whole. He wanted to rip the man apart. He wanted to crush every inch of the hands that had touched her.

But the frenzy was tearing through his body. His spiritual power couldn’t hold its shape long enough to strike. He could only watch her standing there, the gun trembling in her grip.

She can’t do it!

Baar closed his eyes. A raw, ragged breath rattled out of his throat.

Of course not. Her ex-husband. The one she loved. How could she?

In her head, Primo was thrashing in the system space. “Host! What are you doing?! Shoot him! He’s stalling! If Baar blows, it’s over!”

“Idiot!” Margaret’s voice cut through her own mind like a blade. Primo went silent.

She wasn’t calling Primo an idiot. She was calling the original Margaret one.

Taking scraps and calling it love. Getting emotional over nothing.
