Margaret felt a wave of nausea.
“Primo,” she called out in her mind.
Primo said, “Here, Host.”
“Is this the so-called female lead of this book?”

Primo paused for a second. “Host, this is a sweet romance novel. The way the female lead is described in the book is… delicate and pitiful. The kind that makes you want to protect her.”
“Sweet romance?” Margaret almost laughed. “Her lines sound like she graduated top of her class from the Scheming Bitch Acting School. Listen to her tone, her pacing, her facial expressions.”
Primo sputtered for a moment, unable to respond.
“Forget it,” Margaret said. “I know you’re a newborn. You don’t get this stuff yet.”
She pulled her thoughts back and looked at Phoebe again.
“So,” she said lazily, “why are you actually here?”
Phoebe looked up, her eyes sincere. “I heard about your situation. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
“Heard from who?” Margaret asked.
Phoebe’s words caught in her throat.
Margaret’s eyes slowly swept across the three males in the living room, then landed back on Phoebe. “Did they tell you?”
Phoebe’s smile finally cracked. She glanced instinctively at Ardon, then quickly looked away. Her voice dropped to a soft whisper. “Ardon and the others were just concerned about you. They mentioned it in passing. Please don’t misunderstand.”
“Misunderstand what?” Margaret tilted her head. “Misunderstand that they’re flirting with you? Misunderstand that the minute they divorce me, they can’t wait to mate with you? Isn’t it obvious?”
The atmosphere in the living room suddenly froze. Ardon’s face turned red instantly. Raikes’ hand stopped mid-motion, still holding his drink. Kiran’s gaze finally lifted from Phoebe and landed on Margaret’s face.
Phoebe’s expression flickered, but she quickly recovered. She let out a soft sigh, her voice carrying a note of helplessness and hurt. “Margaret, you’ve got it wrong. Ardon and I are just friends. I already have three husbands. How could I ever-”

She stopped at just the right moment. Her eyes dropped. Her lashes fluttered. She looked like she had been wronged terribly, but didn’t want to argue.
Margaret almost laughed out loud.
That little speech-she denied the relationship, but didn’t shut the door completely. And she threw in the bit about already having husbands, planting herself on the moral high ground. Textbook. Absolutely textbook.
