“And if something happened to her, would you take responsibility?” Baar shot back.

They were about to go at each other again. Margaret pressed her fingers to her temple.

“Stop.” She cut them both off and turned to Baar. “This is Prime Planet, not the front lines. Where exactly is safer than here?”

She let the silence hang for a beat, her voice cooling. “And, Commander Iverson, what gives you the right to restrict my movements right now?”

The hallway went dead silent.

Baar froze. He was used to giving orders in the military, used to keeping every threat under his own control. Somewhere along the line, he’d unconsciously put Margaret under his own protection-the territorial instinct of a man who’d spent his life at the top.

But he’d forgotten that in this house, Margaret was the one in charge.

The towering male seemed to shrink right in front of her. His gaze dropped. Something lost flickered through his gold slit-pupiled eyes, and his rigid, ramrod-straight posture softened just a fraction.

Timothy, watching this, puffed out his chest so far he looked ready to float off the ground. He took Margaret’s hand with the ease of long practice. “My Lady, let’s go. Ignore him.”

Margaret didn’t pull away. She let Timothy lead her down the stairs.

Primo’s voice surfaced in her head. “Baar’s probably devastated right now. Bet he’s moping alone in his room as we speak.”

Margaret nearly laughed at the image, absurd as it was. She was in a good mood tonight. “Save your imagination,” she answered silently. “If he wants me to play along, that depends on whether I feel like it. After that commanding performance just now? The fact that I didn’t kick him out of the house is already more than he deserves.”

Primo snapped into flattery mode. “Host, you’re truly magnanimous! I’ll make myself scarce now. Wouldn’t dream of interrupting your date with Mr. Hurst!”

They stepped out into the front yard. The night breeze was cool, cutting through the stuffiness from inside.

At the center of the lawn sat the white compact craft the Empire had issued, its streamlined hull gleaming cold under the stars.

Timothy walked straight to the pilot’s side and pulled the hatch open.

Margaret stood beside the craft, eyeing the expensive machine with open skepticism. “You know how to fly this thing?”

Hovercars in the Interstellar Era didn’t require licenses-top-tier AI navigation, flawless traffic lanes, get in and go.

But a personal flyer was an entirely different matter. High-altitude lane switching, atmospheric readings. manual emergency maneuvers-it was far more complex.

Timothy braced one hand on the hatch door, grinning so bright he outshone the stars. “My Lady, you underestimate me. I don’t just know how to fly-I’m certified at the highest level. Flight instructor rating. If you ever want to learn, I’ll teach you. Guaranteed.”

The words “flight instructor” caught her attention.

“You said it, not me.” Margaret slid into the passenger seat without further debate. “Let’s go. Show me what you’ve got, Lord Hurst.”

Timothy swung into the cockpit and fired up the engines.

The white craft lifted smoothly, melting into the glittering nightscape of Prime Planet.

The high-altitude lanes were nearly empty at this hour-nothing but the occasional military patrol ship cutting through the clouds alongside them.

Timothy handled the controls one-handed, his profile sharp in the dim glow of the instrument panel. Margaret had to admit Timothy had actual skill. The flight was smooth as silk.

Under twenty minutes later, the craft began its descent. The destination was a remote inland lake. Natural bodies of water were painfully scarce in the Interstellar Era. This place had a lake, sure, but the surroundings were hardly scenic-just a sparse scattering of mutated plants, their leaves an eerie purplish-

red.
