Timothy came sprinting back from the lakeshore with a bouquet in his hands.

In an era of scarce vegetation, fresh flowers were a luxury. But these blooms were something else. Their petals were near-translucent, glowing with a soft, pale blue light, like starlight spun into delicate threads.

“My Lady, for you.” Timothy held them out, barely containing his pride. “An exceptionally rare strain. Most plants wither within hours of being cut, but this one-fed a steady supply of spiritual power-can stay alive indefinitely. And it helps a female restore her spiritual realm. Eases fatigue.”

Margaret took the bouquet. The moment her fingers closed around the stems, cool, soothing energy seeped through her skin. Her spiritual realm, still wound tight from the past few days, began to loosen.

She stared at the pale blue petals. A name surfaced before she could stop it.

“Starbloom.”

“Starbloom!” Primo’s voice echoed the word in her head at the same moment.

Timothy blinked, then his grin widened. “My Lady, you really do know everything. I went through dozens of interstellar hunters to track down something worthy of you. Took forever. It’s a lost species-vanished years ago. Most people have never even heard the name.”

Margaret barely registered the flattery. Something heavy slammed into the back of her mind.

She knew that name, and it had nothing to do with being well-read. The first time she’d seen it was in the original host’s diary-pages of desperate, self-effacing devotion..

The original Margaret had written about Raikes giving Phoebe a starbloom.

At the time, she’d thought nothing of it. Now, with everything she’d learned, the questions were piling up faster than she could process.

Raikes was a second-generation heir riding on his family’s name and influence. Where did he get a plant so rare that even the Hurst Group heir had to pull strings to find one?

And more importantly-

Margaret stared down at the bouquet. Her fingers trembled around the stems.

This is an Earth-native plant. But Earth has been gone for ten years.

A species that should have burned with the planet a decade ago-how is it showing up intact on the interstellar black

market?

Raikes found it. Timothy found it. How?

Earth… was it really destroyed?

She’d placed the starbloom in a hydroponic vase by her bedside the night before. Its soft blue glow glowed softly through the dark until dawn, along with the questions spinning in her head.

When she came downstairs the next morning, the living room looked like something out of a perfect domestic portrait.

Cheiron sat at the far end of the table, translucent holographic glasses perched on his nose, scanning the morning briefs with steady fingers. A porcelain coffee cup sat beside his hand.

Blanc stood at attention nearby, its frame just clearing the tabletop, a thermal carafe clutched in its grip. Every time Cheiron took a sip, Blanc refilled the cup.

Baar occupied the armchair by the window, methodically cutting into his bacon and eggs, his brow smooth. The chef had clearly met his standards.

Near the entryway, Timothy stood speaking to one of the male housekeepers, his voice clipped and his face cold.

“My Lady, morning!” He was the first to catch her footsteps, as always.

His demeanor flipped in an instant. He dropped the housekeeper mid-sentence, crossed the room, and slid an arm around her shoulder, guiding her to the table. He pulled out her chair. “The kitchen just finished a specialized breakfast. Perfect temperature. Try it.”

Cheiron removed his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. His gaze swept toward Margaret with a quiet, gentle smile. He said nothing.
