Cheiron sat in his private office with two reports in hand, his expression grim.

“Ms. Greene’s results match her last checkup. Her spiritual realm has expanded, and everything else looks normal-no issues at all.” Cheiron handed Margaret the first report.

He then flicked the thinner sheet in his hand and glanced at Baar, who was leaning against the door. “But yours? You’ve got a real problem.”

Baar straightened up. “The toxin spread?”

“Nope. We didn’t find a single thing.” Cheiron slapped the report down on his desk. “Every last marker is perfect. The toxicology specialists even asked me off the record if Commander Iverson had too much free time-showing up at the Academy of Sciences for a routine physical. The blood sample culture I sent back earlier gave the exact same result.”

Baar frowned.

Margaret shared the same unease. She’d seen Baar in his feral state firsthand. She’d even felt it herself when she purified him-his frenzy level was nothing like his usual baseline.

“Where on earth is this toxin coming from?” Cheiron tapped his desk. his usually gentle face twisted into a rare scowl.

Baar went quiet for a few seconds. “Kiran did this. But the source? It’s almost certainly the insectoids.”

The moment the words left him, the room turned icy.

The interstellar beastmen had fought the insectoids for centuries. TEvery known insectoid toxin was cataloged in the Academy of Sciences database. So what explained this new strain? It slipped past every scanner and ate straight through a male’s spiritual realm.

Had the insectoids evolved?

This wasn’t just a threat to one officer’s safety; it put the entire beastman race at risk.

“We have to report this immediately.” Cheiron made the call on the spot, reaching for his comms device. “I’m contacting the Imperial Household and the Federal Military Council. We’ll assemble every top expert for a full consultation.”

A hand clamped down on his wrist. It was Baar. “No!”

Cheiron wrenched his hand free. “Are you out of your mind? This is a new insectoid weapon. If we don’t report it, are we gonna wait till they march right onto Prime Planet?”

“And then what?” Baar shot back. “Lock me in isolation? Draw my blood every day, study me like a lab rat?”

Cheiron frowned, “It’s how we find an antidote.”

“Before that, the military’ll strip me of command.” Baar held Cheiron’s gaze, not backing down an inch. “You saw what the front’s like right now-you came back with me. The insectoids have been stirring up trouble on the border lately. If I get suspended, who’s gonna take my post?”

“The Council’ll send someone,” Cheiron said.

“Politicians sitting in their offices drinking coffee all day?” Baar scoffed. “What’re they gonna do at the front besides get themselves killed? By the time they finish bickering and make a call, the insectoids will have torn right through the border defense.”

Cheiron had no comeback. He couldn’t argue the point, but he knew how high the stakes were.

He kept pushing. “Baar, you’re in no shape to go back to the front. You can’t control your feral state, Forcing yourself into battle will only get everyone hurt.”

Neither top-tier male would back down. In the cramped office, two waves of powerful spiritual power started leaking out unconsciously. The air grew thick and heavy.

“Enough. Both of you shut up.” Margaret rapped her knuckles on the desk. The two waves of spiritual power vanished instantly.

Her gaze flicked back and forth between the two men before settling on Cheiron. “Give him a few more days. He’s staying at home right now anyway. If he loses it, I’ll be there to handle it.”

Cheiron’s brow furrowed deeply, but his tone softened back to its usual gentleness when he spoke to Margaret, “Even if I sit on this, the higher-ups will find out about his condition sooner or later.”
