Chapter 156 Using Them?

words

There was nothing sharp or aggressive about his words-they were almost gentle, in fact. But every single one landed exactly where it counted.

“Cheiron, you’re wasting your talent not working as a hostage negotiator,” Margaret sighed.

Cheiron huffed a quiet laugh and said nothing. He just waited, calm and patient.

Primo popped into her head out of nowhere. “Host, telling him about Earth isn’t a big deal. You can’t look into all this by yourself anyway. He’s got a sharp mind-it’d be stupid to waste that. Just don’t throw me under the bus, okay?”

“Hmm… let me think about it.” Margaret hesitated inwardly.

She’d always thought her obsession with uncovering the truth about Earth came from simple curiosity. As a transmigrator, she was merely fascinated by a planet that shared the name of her old home.

But now she understood. These buried secrets were the original host’s greatest regret-the weight she’d carried to her grave, never able to set it down.

And now? She was the original host. That meant finding the truth wasn’t just a curiosity anymore. It was something she had to do.

She really did need help. Digging up the truth about Earth across this huge, sprawling interstellar society? With just her and Primo-two total amateurs? They’d never get anywhere, not in a million years.

“Have you ever heard of Earth?” Margaret finally spoke up.

Cheiron thought for a moment. “It’s in the interstellar history records. A low-grade planet on the edge of the Stillstar Galaxy, civilization level F-. It vanished completely ten years ago-wiped out in an interstellar storm of unknown origin, fueled by local wars and space pirate activity.”

He knew more about it than the actual encyclopedia entries.

Margaret wasn’t surprised. Cheiron probably had a whole interstellar library stuffed inside his head.

“My file says I’m from the fringe galaxies of the Stillstar Galaxy.” Margaret looked him straight in the eye. “To be exact—I’m from Earth.”

The room went quiet for a beat,

“Go on,” he said.

“But I don’t have any memories of Earth left at all.” Margaret’s voice sped up a little without her noticing. “All I have are old photos and diaries left behind-proof that I really am from Earth. And my diaries talk

eft behind- about my parents…”

Her voice caught for a second. “I’m not an orphan. I had parents.”

It was a strange, tangled feeling. She’d had parents, had a family. But she couldn’t remember their faces, didn’t know their names, and couldn’t even tell if they were alive or dead.

Cheiron didn’t say anything, but something shifted in his eyes.

“Timothy gave me a flower last night.” Margaret steadied her breath and pushed her emotions back down “Said it was a rare strain he bought for a fortune on the black market-called starbloom.”

She nodded toward the plant in the culture dish on her nightstand.

The flower sat still in the nutrient solution, its petals glowing with that faint, deep blue light.

“But it’s not some rare interstellar flower at all.” Margaret stared at the bloom, her expression complicated. “It’s native to Earth. It looks exactly like the ones in my photos.

“And that’s not all. Raikes-my ex-husband-he got his hands on a starbloom once, too. Gave it to Phoebe.”

Cheiron zeroed in on the key point right away. “The family backing Raikes has ties to the black market. And those twins? They’re from the black market, too-and their hometown is in the Stillstar Galaxy.”

They locked eyes for a split second.

“Right.” Margaret nodded, lowering her voice a little. “I don’t know if Tyrone mentioned the Stillstar Galaxy on purpose in the living room today. It might have been just a casual remark, or he could have been testing me.”

Her gaze hardened. “But they’re definitely not here looking for some quiet, peaceful life.”

“This goes way deeper than we thought,” Cheiron analyzed. “If plants from Earth are still growing out there, that interstellar storm ten years ago wasn’t what it seemed. Hell-Earth might not even be destroyed. It might just be hidden away by some kind of force.”

A cold sweat pricked at the back of Margaret’s neck. Cheiron’s theory was even bolder than anything she’d considered.

“We don’t tell Baar or Timothy about this-not yet.” Cheiron decided on the spot. “Baar’s too straightforward, too hotheaded. He’ll spook them before we know anything. Timothy’s young. He acts on impulse, too. Now that Tyrone and Quentin are living here? I’ll handle testing them.”

Margaret asked, “How are you gonna do that?”

“No rush.” Cheiron stood up. “The smarter the prey, the less you want to charge in guns blazing. You’ve gotta make him think giving us the information is his idea-that he’s getting something out of it.”
