Because the two of them had already become one and the same.

“Think about it for a second,” Primo said, its voice softening to a near whisper. “Haven’t you ever done or felt something that completely clashed with your old self? Something that made no sense at all for who you were before you transmigrated?”
Margaret closed her eyes and ran back through every choice she’d made since arriving in this world.
The most obvious shift was her attitude toward her beastmen husbands.
She and the original host had both known similar gut-wrenching pain. The original host, after all those unfair and hurtful relationships, still clung to a flicker of naivety. She still believed in love, even begged for it.
But Margaret had long since grown completely numb to the idea of romantic relationships.
No, not numb-it was afraid.
When she’d first woken up in this body, that was exactly how she’d acted. She’d been polite to the three husbands on the surface, but she’d seen them as nothing more than a temporary safe haven. She’d been ready to walk away from all of them at a moment’s notice.
But somewhere along the way, that had changed.
She’d started getting used to the warmth of Timothy’s bright, young body when he curled up next to her. She’d learned to spot the clumsy, awkward care hidden under Baar’s overbearing, blunt exterior. And today in the living room? She’d actually sat there patiently, soothing each of them one by one.
Even, unbidden, images flickered through her mind-Baar’s aggressive yet restrained kiss, the soft, fleeting brush of Timothy’s lips against her cheek… She hadn’t pushed either of them away. In fact, deep down, she’d felt a quiet, secret hunger for more.
That hadn’t been her feeling-or at least, not the Margaret from the other world. It had belonged to the Margaret of this interstellar world.
She’d craved a home, craved to be seen, craved for someone to stop and help her when she fell, instead of just walking right past.
Yet every choice she made still carried the strength and decisiveness of the Margaret from her old life.
“I’m some kind of patched-together freak,” Margaret said, letting out a bitter, silent laugh.
Primo spoke up right away, its voice sharp with urgent certainty, “You’re not a freak.
“You two complete each other. She gave you a sense of belonging in this world, a body that will never reject you, and the ability to feel warmth. And you? You gave her an edge-the courage to fight back against her fate. Without you, she’d just be a lonely ghost fading away in silence. Without her, you’d be a rootless drifter tossed into an unfamiliar world-forever on the outside looking in.
“You’re just… more whole now.”

shattering
The words hit her like a weight, shattering the last thin layer of ice around her heart. For a split second, she swore she could see the other girl deep in her consciousness. Battered, broken, and scarred, the girl seemed to reach across time and space to hold her tight.
Margaret didn’t say anything. A single warm tear slipped quietly down the corner of her eye.
on the door
A sharp, sudden rapping on the door cut through the hush of the room.
Margaret snapped back to the present. She wiped the wetness from her cheek, took a deep breath, and her gaze cleared.
Cheiron stood on the outside of the door, holding a vial of bright green liquid. He’d changed our of his formal clothes from earlier. Now he wore soft dark gray loungewear-he looked like the nice college guy, not some top-tier scientist.
“Come in,” Margaret didn’t ask any questions. She’d seen how Cheiron had acted earlier that day, and she’d known he’d come around eventually.
She led Cheiron over to the small sitting area and flopped down onto the couch.
Cheiron held out the vial. “I mixed this fresh today. It’ll cushion your spiritual realm. Expanding too fast isn’t good for you-this will help stabilize things a little.”
Margaret twisted off the cap, took a sniff, and wrinkled her nose. She still tilted her head back and drank the whole thing in one go.
