Cheiron hung his coat on the rack and walked over to the wide workbench. His long fingers flew across the virtual keyboard, typing out a long string of extremely complex decryption commands.

“It’ll take a minute to connect to Central Brain’s core database.” Cheiron pulled out a chair and motioned for Margaret to sit down.

They sat close together.

He turned his head, his gaze drifting past the glowing screen and settling on Margaret’s profile.

Cheiron had always been an extremely rational, restrained person. From the moment Central Brain matched Margaret to him, he’d drawn a clear line for himself-he’d be a reliable, protective husband, and a calm observer.

He’d thought he was the one Margaret trusted most out of all her husbands. After all, they’d known each other the longest, and she’d always been more willing to open up to him.

But that was just what he’d assumed.

Last night in the living room, he’d sat in the corner and watched her let Timothy lean on her shoulder, indulging his clingy antics. This morning at breakfast, she’d automatically worried about Baar’s condition without even thinking about it.

With them, she showed softness, concern, and real emotion.

With him, she’d always kept things polite, cooperative, and strictly professional.

That realization sparked a strange, restless irritation in the usually unflappable Cheiron.

“The search is moving slowly,” Cheiron said suddenly, his voice deeper than usual,

“Hmm? Probably just too much data to sift through,” Margaret said.

Cheiron stated, “You care a lot about Baar.”

Margaret blinked in surprise and turned to look at him.

“The guy’s a walking ticking time bomb-how could I not care?” Margaret retorted on instinct. “If he snaps

and I not care?” Margaret retorte in public, we’re the ones who’ll have to clean up the mess.”

“What about Timothy?” Cheiron tilted his head slightly, his eyes locked on hers. “He’s just a kid who barely hit adulthood, and you still spoil him rotten.”

Margaret finally picked up on the weird vibe.

She looked Cheiron up and down. He was wearing a dark shirt today, all put-together and reserved. But the words coming out of his mouth? They sounded straight-up jealous.

“Mr. Jewell.” Margaret leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms and watching him with an amused glint in her eye. “Are you jealous?”

She’d asked him straight out, fully expecting him to dance around the question and deflect.

But Cheiron didn’t look away. The sharp, possessive edge he’d always kept carefully under control came surging to the surface, unfiltered.

“Yeah,” Cheiron admitted it openly, his voice rough and low.

Margaret froze. All the teasing remarks she’d had ready died on her tongue, shut down completely by that single word.

Cheiron leaned forward, bracing one hand on the back of Margaret’s chair and planting the other on the desk. He boxed her in, close enough that the air between them felt tight and charged.

“We’ve known each other longer than anyone.” Cheiron’s breath brushed against her ear. “You trust me with your biggest secret. You team up with me. But you won’t give me even a little bit of messy, unplanned feeling”

He paused for a beat, his gaze tracing the curve of her cheek and the line of her jaw. “Margaret, that’s not fair. Not to me,”

Margaret’s heart skipped a beat.

He was framing jealousy and begging for attention like it was some formal, carefully structured academic negotiation.

Margaret swallowed hard, trying to yank the upper hand back. “We’re partners right now. Mixing feelings into this? It’s just gonna complicate things.”

“Partners?” Cheiron huffed a quiet laugh. “Then, as your legal husband, I think I’m entitled to use a few perks. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

They were so close now.

Before Margaret could even process what he’d said, the Holo-bracelet on the workbench let out a sharp, high-pitched beep.

The tense, charged mood shattered instantly. She snapped her head toward the screen, her heart still hammering in her chest.

The search results were in.

Cheiron pulled back, a flicker of disappointment crossing his eyes. He stepped back to a polite, professional distance, and that cool, reserved mask slipped right back into place,

Stamped across every single one were two top-secret seals-one from the Federal Military Council, and one from the Imperial Household.
