Margaret wasn’t sure how much time had passed. By the time Cheiron finally pulled away, slow and reluctant, she was seconds away from gasping for air.
He leaned back against the chair, chest heaving as he caught his breath. His usually crisp collar was rumpled and pulled askew, exposing a wide stretch of pale, smooth skin.
Margaret wasn’t faring much better. Her lips were swollen, and her heart was hammering so hard she swore it might burst right out of her chest.
She swiped her tongue along the corner of her mouth and caught a faint metallic tang. She couldn’t tell which of them had bitten the other.
“Got your motivation now?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
Cheiron offered a low laugh. He tugged Margaret onto his lap, wrapping both arms around her waist and resting his chin in the crook of her shoulder. The whole pose was soft, intimate, totally unguarded.
“Yeah” he said, his voice rough and gravelly. “Now we can talk business.”
Margaret rolled her eyes. Of course, he’d flip straight back to work mode right after copping a feel.
“Spit it out. What’s the plan?” she asked.
“Simple, really.” Cheiron shifted his weight to make her more comfortable on his lap. “Both the Empire and the Federation need you.”
Margaret stayed quiet, waiting for him to keep going.
Cheiron said, “Normally, every galactic citizen falls under one jurisdiction-either the Empire or the Federation. But you’re different. You’re the only SSS-class female in the entire galaxy. The Empire wants you, and the Federation will never let you slip through their fingers.”
Margaret could feel the pieces clicking into place.
“If neither side will back down, make them both earn you.” Cheiron’s voice was steady, confident-like he’d already mapped out every step. “You can accept appointments from both the Empire and the Federation at the same time, Have the Imperial Household grant you a noble title and an actual position with real authority, one that matches your rank. And get the Federal Military Council to name you a special advisor with actual pull in the military.
“Once you hold high enough rank on both sides, you’ll have every right to use both keys-and unlock that door.”
Margaret frowned. “They’d actually go for that? They’re not worried I’ll turn on them?”
“They’ll say yes,” Cheiron smiled, a sharp, knowing grin that showed exactly how little he thought of the galaxy’s ruling class. “They need you that badly. They’re fighting over you for more than just your battlefield deeds. That mass purification ability of yours turned the tide of our centuries-long war against the insectoids. It’s also about-”
Cheiron’s gaze darkened, a flicker of irritation crossing his face. “The top brass-they’re all SS-class or

SSS-class. They can’t get matched to mates, and they’re desperate for purification. And female purification always requires the female’s explicit consent. Giving you a fancy, high-ranking position? It’s the perfect excuse to summon you whenever they want, to get close to you.”
Some of the younger royals and nobles would probably even try to lock her down as their mate while they had the chance. Cheiron didn’t say that part out loud.
“So if I make these demands, they won’t see me as a threat. They’ll think I’m just showing my greedy side —that now I have wants, they can control me more easily?” Margaret summed it up perfectly.
“Exactly.” Cheiron looked up at her, a faint heat still lingering in his eyes from earlier.
Margaret was too busy running the numbers to admire the view. Her mind was spinning with how feasible this plan was. This was a once-in-a-lifetime shot. Whether she was chasing the truth about Earth’s destruction or just climbing her way up to power in this galaxy, she couldn’t let this slip away.
Cheiron smiled, “Go for whatever you want, Margaret. Don’t hold back. I’ll be the sharpest blade in your arsenal.”
Those words-almost a vow-made Margaret’s heart skip a beat. She was quietly relieved that Cheiron was on her side. With how well he could read people, how easily he could manipulate a situation, she wasn’t sure she’d ever be able to outplay him if they were enemies.
