“Commander Iverson, good work out there,” Darren said, his tone polite and measured. “But before we dive into frontline matters, the Council thinks we need to talk about something else first.”

Baar said nothing. He just swept his gaze over the man, flat and unreadable.

Darren said, “It’s about Lady Margaret.”

Baar tapped one finger against the tabletop.

There it is.

“What Lady Margaret did out on the front lines was a huge win for the Federal Military,” Darren said slowly, his face earnest. “A contribution that big-the Federation can’t just ignore it. The public’s watching, Everyone’s talking about it.”

A few of the older men around the table nodded along, putting on their best concerned-for-the-nation faces.

Baar cur straight through the preamble. “What are you offering?”

Darren smiled, “Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss-”

Baar sneered, “Mr. Hurst of the Hurst Group blew up a few stars for her not long ago. Cost him five hundred million credits. What’s the Military Council’s annual budget, again?”

Darren’s smile froze mid-face.

Someone off to the side coughed lightly. The air in the room shifted, awkward now.

Darren was a decades-long veteran of these political games, though. He didn’t linger on the jab, pivoting fast. “Material rewards can wait. But we need to show her we mean business. Inviting Lady Margaret to visit military headquarters-that’d be a way to…”

“Darren,” Baar said his name, sharp and final.

Darren cut himself off.

“I’ve been commander for a few years now.” Baar laced his fingers together and rested them on the table, his golden eyes sharp and empty of small talk. “Cut the crap. Tell me what you actually want.”

The council chamber went quiet for a beat.

Darren exchanged a look with the council members on either side of him, some silent agreement passing between them. Then he dropped the polite act entirely,

“Fine. I’ll be blunt.” Darren folded his hands on the table. “We have reliable intel that the Imperial Household’s already putting together an official position for Lady Margaret. Not just some empty title, either. They’re planning to give her a barren planet as her own fiefdom.”

Baar’s expression didn’t shift. The Empire was moving faster than he’d expected,

“Everyone knows what the Empire’s playing at.” Darren kept going, his voice picking up speed, “An SSS- class female—the only one in the entire galaxy. Whoever locks her down first gains a massive advantage. If Lady Margaret accepts that appointment from the Imperial Household, just because their offer’s better…”

He paused, locking eyes with Baar. “It’d be an irreversible loss for the Federation’s front lines.

“Commander Iverson, as Lady Margaret’s matched husband…” Darren chose his words carefully. “The Council has to consider whether you’re still fit for this position. The Imperial Household hasn’t exactly hidden that they want to absorb the Federation. If your wife sides with the Empire-your loyalty…”

“Try it,” Baar cut him off. His voice was light, almost amused. “See who the frontline troops answer to-me, their commander, or the Military Council.”

The temperature in the chamber dropped sharply, all at once.

Darren’s face tightened.

That was a flat-out declaration. If they wanted to go to war over this, Baar wasn’t backing down.

Baar hadn’t built his military reputation on his family name. He’d led charges straight through insectoid defenses, reclaiming three lost star sectors the brass had written off as unrecoverable.

If the Council tried to remove him right now, the front lines would mutiny by morning,

Darren went silent for a full five seconds.

“You’re joking, Commander Iverson.” Darren’s tone softened, backtracking fast. “The Council’s just weighing all the possibilities. We’re not targeting you, not at all. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing. Keep Lady Margaret on the Federation’s side. Having her here is good for you, good for the front, good for the whole Federation. Isn’t that right?”

Baar scoffed internally.

This old bastard talks a big game about the greater good, but everyone knows the real score. Every single one of these council members is riddled with spiritual contamination. The side effects from their frontline days get worse every year. Regular purifiers don’t do jack for SS or SSS-class males.

It is obvious what they really want.

“What am I supposed to do if she takes the Imperial Household’s offer?” Baar shot back. “Lock her up? Stand in her way?”

He tapped the table once, not even bothering to look up at them. “Don’t forget. I’m just one of her five husbands. And I’m not exactly her favorite, either.”

At that, the chamber went dead silent. The veteran officers exchanged looks, stunned.
